VRChat Success Stories: How SpookyGhostBoo Used the Creator Economy to Increase Her Earnings by 4X

If you’re a VRChat user, you’ve almost certainly heard of The Black Cat. The open, schmoozy yet cozy restaurant is a touchstone for many, being one of the first worlds that users often encounter in VRChat.

SpookyGhostBoo – the world’s creator – has seen millions of visits to her world. Yet, when she decided to monetize the world, she ran into an immediate struggle: getting her supporters to use a system built on friction.

Finding the Pain Points of an Old System

At the time, the primary method creators typically used to allow folks to support their work was Patreon. Someone would typically click a link in the world, be redirected to another website, and then have to sign up for another service… only to wait for an unknown amount of time to receive the actual rewards they were promised.

While it worked, would-be supporters struggled to give SpookyGhostBoo their support.

It wasn’t ideal!

“The biggest challenge was convincing people to leave the VRChat platform and go to Patreon,” said SpookyGhostBoo.

A Smoother System: The VRChat Creator Economy

It was clear that SpookyGhostBoo needed something better. That’s where the VRChat Creator Economy came in.

When VRChat introduced the Creator Economy, SpookyGhostBoo was quick to see the potential benefits as one of the system’s early adopters.

SpookyGhostBoo built an in-world UI that allowed users to explore how The Black Cat could be customized if they subscribed to support her work. While, in the past, supporters would simply have their name added to a wall, with this system, they could receive an instant benefit – one that could change the entire experience of the world for them.

In fact, they could even preview these benefits before purchasing them, allowing her to not only reach her most loyal supporters, but also visitors who were waltzing through The Black Cat for the first time.

This meant dramatically less friction – and, as expected, an increase in revenue and supporters.

The Results Speak for Themselves

The shift to VRChat’s Creator Economy had immediate and impressive results.

“I saw about a 4x increase in the money I get every month, compared to Patreon. With Patreon, I receive around $1k, but with [the VRC CE] I see $4k-$5k a month,” said SpookyGhostBoo.

What’s more surprising is that this increase happened with less effort on her part. While Patreon required a lot of manual management and workarounds, the integration with VRChat’s Creator Economy streamlined the process, enabling her to focus on what she does best: improving and maintaining The Black Cat.

We still need significantly better improvements to groups. I look forward to the day when this entire system is streamlined and easy to access.

Agreed! I look forward to the improvements that will be made to groups in the future.

The Black Cat actually makes use of a few group improvements - for example, visitors can easily open the official The Black Cat group with a “Join Group!” button in the world.

This really helps groups grow, so I’m glad it was implemented!

I like the idea of those articles, hope it can give ideas for the creator userbase to make interesting integrations. Hope that most will play fair and not lock down their core features behind a paywall.

Good initiative to share stories like that. Hope to see some maybe do talks about it too when this gets more accepted in the community.
