Quest 2 + Link Cable + SteamVR = Locked to 60 FPS in VRChat?

Hey everyone,

I’m having a weird issue with my Quest 2 and SteamVR. When I play VRChat through SteamVR with my Link Cable, my FPS seems locked to 60. This is super frustrating because I have a decent PC with an RX 6700 XT that should be able to handle way better framerates.

I even tested it:
-Native Quest App: When I launch VRChat directly through the Quest Link application (while still using the Link Cable), I get a smooth 120 FPS.
-Steam Link (Wireless): Even playing wirelessly with Steam Link gives me great performance.
It seems like something is specifically limiting my framerate when using SteamVR with the Link Cable. My GPU has no issues pushing 120 frames in VRchat.

My settings:
-Render Resolution: I’ve set my headset to 100% resolution at 120Hz in both the Quest Link app and SteamVR.
-Advanced Supersample Filtering: Disabled in SteamVR.
-ASW: Disabled in the Oculus Debug Tool (no change).
-Radeon: disabled all freesync, vsync, and adaptive sync settings

Is anyone else experiencing this? Are there any known fixes or settings I might be missing? It feels like I should be getting much better performance with a wired connection! So many people play wirelessly with airlink or virtual desktop but I really just want to play with the link cable.

Thanks in advance for any help!

I’m unsure of the limitations of SteamVR thru Quest Link. 60 is your reprojection framerate, so there may be some additional overhead that’s cutting you just below 120, which causes SteamVR to reproject down.

Try checking out Echo’s SteamVR optimization guide – a lot of those settings can help eke out a few more frames.

Thank you for your response! That optimization guide was helpful, though it looks like some of the SteamVR optimization settings are out of date. No big deal though.

I busted out the Oculus Debug Tool, fired up VRchat, and discovered some interesting stuff.
It turns out that Asynchronous Spacewarp is the thing that’s hard capping my frames at 60. When I disable it in the Debug Tool, my frames immediately shoot up, but because they aren’t hitting 120hz, I suspect ASW kicks in and caps the framerate.

Also, an interesting note about the game menu’s fps counter: it always shows 60fps. Weird, eh? That’s how it works on my system, at least.
