Developer Update - 10 October 2025

Welcome to the Developer Update for October 10, 2025.

Today’s featured world is Midnight Rest by Bia_Kawaii_Br.

Announcements

Spookality is Here!

That’s right – Spookality is here!

Spookality is our annual celebration of the dark, spooky, and ██████. This year, creators can submit avatars and worlds between September 22 and October 13. We will announce the winners (and post world and avatar rows) on October 22.

Both Avatars and Worlds will be judged – and the winners will receive rewards!

You can read more about it here.

A Reminder to Upgrade to the Latest SDK!

Attention!

In 2-3 weeks, we will start blocking new avatars from being uploaded by older SDKs. That means you need to update to our latest version, SDK 3.9.0!

You’ll be able to edit old avatars without issue – but if you try to upload a new one, it will be blocked. So get to updating!

2025.3.4 is in Open Beta!

…we tried to get it out yesterday, but hit a bit of a snag!

Nevertheless, 2025.3.4 is still in Open Beta.

The main feature of 2025.3.4 is the Shop!

What can you find in the Shop? Stuff! What kind of stuff? Well, you’ll see!

In short: you’ll be able to buy all kinds of things in the Shop: that might mean Items, it might mean Emoji, it might mean Stickers, it also might mean crazier things like, say… Portals.

We have some neat surprises that we’re excited to show off. Cross your fingers for Tuesday?

Debug UI Rework

A rarely used feature of VRChat is our World Debug Views. These have so far only been available using obscure keybinds (good luck pressing RShift, ~, 1 on a non-US keyboards! hint: on a DE layout ~ refers to °), required the --enable-debug-gui launch parameter, and were entirely unavailable in VR mode. This is changing!

In an upcoming update, the debug UI will be available from a button in the Quick Menu. The launch parameter has been removed entirely. And the best part: The new UI will work in VR, with full controller interaction!

For now, the actual content of the pages will remain largely the same, except for one new feature (see below!) and one page used for internal debugging*. This rework forms the foundation to add more useful data for creators later on, but also as a stepping stone for some internal debug views we can use to accelerate our testing and development.

(*If you’re curious, it’s the “AssetBundles / Memory” page - we don’t expect users to be able to make much sense of this data, but it can be crucial for debugging, so we are leaving it in for people to submit screenshots if needed for a particular bug.)

Obviously, views gated by “World Debugging” will retain that behavior. Speaking of, there is one new overlay tool available via the updated debug UI, which is available behind the “World Debugging” flag: VRC_UiShapes Preview!

With this overlay enabled, all VRC_UiShapes in your world will be highlighted, and a text overlay will appear on screen (or your hands, when in VR) giving you details about what you are pointing at.

Here’s a peek at an in-development version of all this!

It supports UI themes!

A preview of the VRC_UiShapes debugger. Note that World Debugging is not enabled in the VRChat Home world for regular users, so you wouldn’t be able to see this here (ssshhh don’t tell the art team I’m leaking their naming scheme!). Generally speaking, this feature would only be used by world creators on their own creations.

The Legacy Avatars Row is Going Away

In Ye Olden Days, VRChat used to suggest some specific avatars to users. Over time, these began to be used less and less, but some folks still had a nostalgic connection to them – so we put them in the “Legacy” row.

Well, that row is going away! But for The Old Heads, we don’t want to completely erase them, you know? So we’re listing them here so they’re easily yoinkable if you so desire to yoink them.

big that the debug ui gets a rework, about time. the amount of time i spend in that damn window at events… great that there will be an easy access to it soon!!

The Legacy avatars are also catalogued on the VRChat Wiki.

shelur also leads to an avatar not found page

I really like the new UI design and theme!
Could it be possible to upload the Legacy Avatars to the Avatar Marketplace for Free?

Wheres Nikkei link???

that’s not entirely true, you could just walk up to your PC’s keyboard (or maybe use some advanced virtual one) and press the key combo, and voila.

however, it’s true that its usability is atrociously bad in VR - it appears in a random place around you, is un-pick-up-able, and teleports whenever you open up your menu, or something of that kind - haven’t really done that in a while.

i’m glad to see it improved.

Fare thee well old legacy category.
I think I was probably one of the few that kept my avatar in the list updated

I hope vrchat will take a look at this log spam. There are tons of things logged that are not relevant to world creation that I would like to toggle “off”

I made this canny post back in 2023, idk if it was seen, but it has this example image for which kind of lines

Why are the avatars legacy? what was the reason that they aren’t in the public avatar tab?

They were the original batch of community sourced avatars to create a public list with. But then a few years ago they decided to crowd source a new batch, so the old ones got turned into the ‘legacy’ list.

Aw should at least keep Robot, or the original dummy.

Excited about the shop, as long as the prices aren’t stupid.

The models likely used SDK2 which is getting deprecated.
