Spookality 2025 Jam!

Strasz 4:23 AM: Hey man, I know it’s late but I saw you on Slack. I’m guessing you saw it?
Tupper 4:27 AM: Why’d you wake me up? It’s the third time…
Strasz 4:28 AM: I know. I’ve received, like… a hundred messages? More, maybe? Discord broke, it’s just showing me random numbers and question marks.
Tupper 4:30 AM: Me too. Everything’s up, though? I can just go back to sleep. I don’t know why you’re worried.
Strasz 4:31 AM: Yeah, things are working, it’s just that, like, they’re all in there.
Tupper 4:34 AM: All of them, yeah. It’s probably just a bug.
Strasz 4:36 AM: Every other world is empty, just like last night. Literally zero people.
Tupper 4:40 AM: I’m there too.
Strasz 4:41 AM: Huh, didn’t you just get up?
Tupper 4:41 AM: I’m there too.
Strasz 4:42 AM: Where?
Tupper 4:42 AM: I’m there too.
Strasz 4:43 AM: Are you lagging or something? What’s going on?
Tupper 4:50 AM: I’m there too.
Tupper 4:55 AM: I’m there too.
Strasz 4:56 AM: okay seriously what’s going on?
Tupper 5:01 AM: I’m there too.
Tupper 5:23 AM: I’m there too.
Tupper 5:50 AM: I’m there too.
Tupper 6:01 AM: I’m there too.
Tupper 6:21 AM: I’m there too.
Tupper 6:50 AM: I’m there too.
Tupper 7:01 AM: I’m there too.
Tupper 7:02 AM: I’m there too.

Spookality 2025 is here – won’t you be there, too?

Spookality is our annual celebration of the dark, spooky, and [REDACTED]. This year, creators can submit avatars and worlds between September 22 and October 13. We will announce the winners (and post world and avatar rows) on October 20.

Both Avatars and Worlds will be judged – and the winners will receive rewards!

More on that later.

Read the full contest rules here.

Let’s talk about the Avatar Jam first!

Spookality 2025 Avatar Jam

This year, the theme for the Avatar Jam is analog horror. Numbers stations, dusty VHS tapes, abandoned office buildings, and long-forgotten save files – pick your favorite flavor, as long as you think it fits the aesthetic. It doesn’t matter if you choose to create something glitchy, or just slightly askew of normal: the beauty of analog horror is that a lawn chair could be made to be spooky if it has the right filter.

Avatar submitted to the Spookality 2025 Avatar Jam will be judged on a scale of 1 - 10 across the following categories:

  • Performance: Must be Medium or better on all platforms (PC, Android, iOS)
  • Style / Aesthetics: Is this a good-looking avatar?
  • Extra Features: bonus points for face tracking, desktop arm, etc.

Avatars MUST be cross-platform (PC, Android & iOS!) Likewise, avatars must have been uploaded after the start of the jam!

So, what about prizes?

The top ten entries will receive:

  • 1 year of VRC+, to be split with up to 4 people on one team.
  • A special Spookality 2025 badge.
  • Fast-tracked into the Avatar Marketplace Seller Program, if they’re not already in it, along with being featured in a special Avatar Marketplace row.

As a note for that last one, winners may submit paid OR public (free) avatars on this row, which will also feature avatars from sellers, like we did for the Summer Festival Jam!

Spookality 2025 World Jam

This year, for the Spookality World Jam, we’re pulling in a second theme that we’d like creators to follow: Shifting Shadows. This is not an aesthetic theme, but more a directional one. In short, we’d like creators to create short, replayable horror experiences that never unfold the same way twice.

That could be a game – or it could be a more passive experience – but it’s gotta shift and be a little different (or a lot different!) each time.

World creators can certainly choose to jump on the analog horror theme mentioned above for avatar creators! Given the nature of analog horror, there’s some potential there! With that said, you are free to use any particular aesthetic you’d like, as long as it’s spooky.

Worlds submitted to the Spookality 2025 World Jam will be judged on a scale of 1 - 10 across the following categories:

  • Replayability: How replayable is this world? Is it fun to play or explore multiple times in a row?
  • Technical Execution: Is this world free of technical bugs?
  • Horror / Spooky theme: Was this world thematic for Halloween?
  • Overall Experience

Worlds MUST be cross-platform (PC, Android & iOS!) Likewise, worlds must have been uploaded after the start of the jam!

So, what about prizes?

The top ten entries will receive:

  • 1 year of VRC+, to be split with up to 4 people on one team.
  • A special Spookality 2025 badge.
  • Fast-tracked into the Creator Economy program, if they’re not already in it
  • World Row feature

All other entrants will be considered to be featured in the Spookality World Row – although they will be featured after the winners.
