Video player Broke

I am PCVR Person i am try to watch but it say video error can anyone help me roar

@damienrc1656 Is this about YouTube video URLs? Can you provide an affected URL?

Did you even get the point of the question? He meant YouTube links straight up don’t work anymore. You should know that by now.

That is a bad assumption to make. yt-dlp supports many, many video services and direct URLs, there are so many failure scenarios. When someone reports a “video player broke”, it could also mean that the video player material is magenta/pink on some mobile device, or something else is wrong. We don’t know without additional context.

There are also several ways a YouTube URL playback can fail, including (but not limited to) yt-dlp issue #17456 (HTTP Error 403: Forbidden with android_vr), age-restricted videos requiring a login, “Sign-in to confirm you’re not a bot”, etc.

We’ve been having this issue with our Karaoke events.

There is an issue right now where any video that is geoblocked in ANY country is blocked from EVERY country in vrchat MOST of the time. There’s nothing we can do to fix it as normal users. :frowning:

Try it and you should see the difference:

Blocked in Russia: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LN4ftqNtd1I (Shouldnt work)
Blocked Nowhere: https://youtu.be/_L61loT_snA (Should work)

A workaround for now is to play videos that are not geoblocked in any country and wait to see if a fix is released. <3

It doesn’t fix everything, but VRCVideoCacher does make sure that many videos work again.

Additionally there’s something about that in the feedback portal:

To echo tupper from the VRChat Community Team, I can’t recommend to actually use VRCVideoCacher to be safe. It uses the upstream yt-dlp executable.

Re: the AVPro feature request, that doesn’t address YouTube playback in VRChat without pre-muxed formats; it mainly benefits third-party tools such as VRCVideoCacher which replace the yt-dlp executable and merge separate formats to a pre-muxed file before restreaming to a video player.

Still works better when logged in than not using it at all.

I wonder what sort of changes they’ve done for security, maybe they could be implemented in VRCvideocacher

VRChat has removed most of the command line options, including arbitrary command execution options.

Deno has been replaced with a custom JavaScript runtime, if I recall correctly it’s named vrcrustyscript.

I don’t think there’s any dynamic linking to ffmpeg either.

No youtube links are working still. VRCVideoCacher doesn’t work with Quest headsets, so right now, no real workaround. Of course, any other site and we can to click that untrusted URL option, even if the site is directly compatible with VRC (Rumble works well). Would be nice to have alternative sites like Rumble when Youtube pooches the players (NOT TWITCH/KICK).

I’m not sure if this is on-topic.

Without an affected YouTube URL, I can say: There are several scenarios where this is not a bug and not supported by yt-dlp, such as age-restricted videos, geo-fenced videos outside of your country, DRM-protected movies, and “Sign-in to confirm you’re not a bot” errors with YouTube as an example.

The most common yt-dlp issue #17456 in VRChat’s yt-dlp 2026.07.04 affecting YouTube playback is explained there:

The feature request to update yt-dlp in VRChat to yt-dlp 2026.08.19 (with a youtube:player_client=android,web_embedded,-visionos customization patch for VRChat) is there:

I forgot to mention VRChat’s yt-dlp source code changes are proprietary, where no source code has been made available to the VRChat community. So no, those cannot be generally implemented in VRCVideoCacher or in any yt-dlp forks. Ideas can be copied, the source code cannot be at this time, and we may not even know everything that’s been changed in VRChat’s yt-dlp fork.

Ah, in my view VRChat the game is careful in how it calls it’s yt-dlp, so the existence of dangerous command line options doesn’t really scare me. Like if someone figures out how to run yt-dlp --wipe-this-pc --yes-please-do-the-needful that would be bad, but it’s sufficiently unlikely

For using other services like “kick” or “rumble” I think it’s worth pursuing if it can get some of the server load off YouTube.
