Developer Update - 23 August 2022

Hmmmmmmmm… ok??? maybe i’ll try all of these when it comes out * Serious Ruv expression *

The updated avatar menu is nice, but still I feel most of the changes will be useless until a proper avatar search is implemented. Tags and all that don’t mean much when we are still limited to such a tiny list of “Public avatars” (That I have almost never used)

Honestly, we kinda do need it, since they’ve recently raised the favorites limit, it’ll start being a hastle to manage so much on the current one. And plus, they’re trying to substitute mod featrues into the base game.

The author can make good avatars, but that doesn’t mean he can make good worlds.

People won’t go into a bad world for a good avatar. If the author makes a good avatar, then it will be easier to find it in the search.

Besides, people will stop making duplicates of avatars.
If they are already in the search.

Users will always make duplicate avatars. Usually just to have their own and if not a better version than what’s avail.

With the world on the other hand…if a specific user is unable to obtain said avatar, then you have to mention it to that content creator about the issue, otherwise it will stay that way till someone else does.

Yes, tired of my vrchat freezing everytime I close the main menu. Twice as bad when a video is playing and I need to re-sync it because of the lag

Could we see some sort of Avatar Search feature?

As of right now, it is very hard to find avatars that are of good quality and make and usually the good ones aren’t in avatar worlds because the creators don’t want to make a world they have to keep updating for each new avatar they make.
I know that there are people who want only their friends to have their avatars they make or just distrubute it in only fine amounts but heres what I think you could possibly propose.

  1. Have an avatar search where an avatar is searched by name or author and if it is in a world (via pedistool) the player would have to go to that world and get it. But it’s not in a world and it’s a public avatar then the person can just change into it right then and there.

  2. Make it so that when you are making an avatar you can click a box that gives the creator the ability to put the avatar in an “Avatar Search Pool” which allows people to search for their avatar as well as making it so the creator chooses wether or not they want that avatar in the search pool. Again the avatar could just be searched by name or by author. Furthermore, I think a feature where you could also make it so that past avatars uploaded to public could be added to the search pool via the VRChat website so then people don’t have to go into their unity projects and update every avatar to be in the search pool. Obviously avatars will not be added to the search pool by default. The creator has to phyically make it so.

  3. maybe a combo of 1 and 2.

As a final note, Obviously some avatars shouldn’t be added to the pool like crasher avatars or avatars people have to buy. I would like to hear ideas on how to possibly fix this feature but I would propose for the crasher avatars is probably make it so the creator who made the crasher can’t upload to the pools anymore or something like that.

Thank you for your time. Having this feature would be a great help in spreading avatars around as well as creating more of a community around content creators within VRChat simply because people will know who made these avatars and be able to better show off their avatars and actually see their work in public.

maybe they could add a world or worlds related to it that it is found in for those who wanna browse those like it?

I hope they add it sooner rather than later, it’s a pain that people can’t get my public avatars unless it’s in a world or cloned. With mods they spread like wildfire, now people have to wait for me to update my world with more pages and more stuff to fill it. I’m not an experienced world maker so it takes a long time for it to be updated. Plus, after updates, I still make new avatars so those ones get left out for a couple months before I can update it again. It’s frustrating that people can’t just check an author and see their work.

I’m glad for the updates, but I want to ask as an avatar creator for avatar search. I see people talking about it but not in the way I view it so I’ll give my input.

I am not a world creator and would much rather not have to make a world to house my avatars. I’ve become one out of necessity. Because of mods I didn’t need to update my world, my new avatars would just spread from people searching for them and sharing them with their friends. After the update removing them, I have to update my world that I hadn’t intended to really update for another month or so while I naturally learn more about world creation. The update destroyed those plans.

In short, I just want people to find my avatars. I’d rather make a world because I want to make a world.

i think avatar searching should exist too, but a limited extent like people who create avatars can be searched or not and only get by world or the person who created it

Just letting you know that your videos do not work on iOS or select versions of macOS.

According to the discord they’re webm, and in a codec iOS and older versions of macOS do not support.

iOS does have limited support for webm & VP9. But for broadest compatibility H264 M4V is recommended.

Codecs (such as AV1, for example) are still in infancy and are not widely supported.

They aren’t AV1, they’re VP8, which is natively supported in basically everything connected to the internet… save for Apple products. :upside_down_face: Thanks, Tim!

Additionally, we have an upload file limit of 8MB, which unfortunately can be a tough limit to hit with h264 without turning it into a 320x240 blocky mess-- or me messing with ffmpeg options all day.

I used gfycat before but I’m not a huge fan of how the embed looks here on Discourse, and I can’t customize the embed as we use a managed Discourse instance. I’d have to edit a theme or plugin, I think.

I’ll see what I can do to use h264s instead going forward.

Edit: I managed to find pretty decent h264 settings! I’ll use this going forward.

But by the way Tupper replied to me makes me think it has a low chance of being implemented, basically saying it is quite niche but they implemented mirror resolution changing which is pretty much as niche as the viewpoint tweaker… Kinda boggles my mind.

We’re definitely aware people have a need for the ability to change avatar viewpoint at runtime. It’s documented internally and we’ve got it tracked, we just aren’t working on it yet.
