Crash On Steam Deck

Over the past month, I’ve been experiencing frequent crashes while playing VRChat on my Steam Deck. The issues usually appear in the following ways:

  1. After launching the game, I sometimes get stuck on the “Joining” screen and cannot enter the world.

  2. Sometimes I can enter a world, but there is no audio, and if I try to switch worlds the screen turns black and the game freezes.

  3. In some cases everything works normally at first, but after about ten minutes the game suddenly starts lagging, then the audio disappears, and shortly afterward the game freezes and crashes.

Currently I do not have a PC and only use a Steam Deck. These problems started around March, and one of my friends who also plays VRChat on a Steam Deck has been experiencing the same issues.

This situation has been quite frustrating because my friends often think I suddenly leave the game without explanation when the crashes happen.

I have tried searching online for similar reports or solutions, but I haven’t been able to find much information.

So I would like to ask: Is the VRChat team aware of these issues on Steam Deck, and is anything being done to address them?
Will it still be possible to continue playing VRChat on Steam Deck in the future?

I’m on steam deck and this is the exact problem I have, after 10 minutes it like crashes or like the audio goes out it’s so weird. Idk why this keep happening and it’s annoying, at first when I was playing I don’t remember it doing this in steam deck now all of a sudden since early April it’s been crashing.

Same here. I’ve encountered every issue mentioned at least once. The one I run into every time is being unable to either lead my homework or any other world. Only solution I’ve found is deleting all cache manually or uninstall and reinstalling VRChat. It’ll boot up and run fine the first time but any subsequent times the issue will prop up. Requiring the same procedure to boot up properly.

Audio also seems to be a bit off. With headphones on a noticeable popping sound happens when VRchat boots up properly. I’ve noticed when in desktop mode you’ll also see the KDE input/output mini window showing “ACP/ACP3X/ACP6X Audio Coprocessor Headphones” (or Speaker) flash up when VRChat boots up. I assume the audio interface being reinitialised. One side effect when his happens is breaking something like Discord or Vendord voice calls running at the same time, can’t hear or speak, because the input and output vanish and don’t reappear. Requiring those programs to be restarted. This didn’t use to be a problem.

I’ve tried various proton versions, Experimental, GE-Proton10-33-rtsp22-4 GE-Proton10-26-rtsp20, GE-proton10-34. None seem to fix the issues.

It appears there were issues like this a few years back, as I found some steam forums about this topic from around 2022-24, too. Might it be a similar issue?

No. This issue started in March.

If you encounter the same issue as I did on the Steam Deck, try switching the compatibility to Proton 9.0-4.
