Welcome to the Creator Economy (Docs)

Identity is a big part of VRChat – and that means finding an avatar that fits you. Yet, that can be a bit of a pain, especially if you aren’t adept with Unity, or if you don’t feel like visiting hundreds of worlds to try to find something that fits.

But what if you didn’t have to do any of that – what if you could simply find something that works for you from inside VRChat? What if you could browse through a ton of easily accessible options, all organized by category? What if you could do so while supporting avatar creators, ensuring they have the means to keep making the fits you love?

Well, you’ll be able to shortly – the Avatar Marketplace is coming very soon!

The Avatar Marketplace lets you find an avatar from within VRChat, without the need for Unity, or any external website.

You probably have a lot of questions, though – so let’s talk about how it works, what it means for creators, and what’s coming next.

Introducing the Avatar Marketplace

The Avatar Marketplace allows folks to buy avatars from within VRChat. It’s easy! Simply go to the Avatars tab, click Explore, and start browsing! See an avatar you like? Click it – try it on! Like what you see? Cool – buy it with VRChat Credits and now it’s yours!

The store will launch with an initial installment of high-quality avatars, and we expect this number to grow rapidly as creators move their wares to the Marketplace.

Through this new system, we’ve tried to remove a lot of the frustration from finding an avatar that works for you. For example, you can easily see what an avatar’s performance ranking is, without having to dig for it. If you see someone wearing an avatar that’s on the marketplace, you don’t have to figure out where to find it – that information is now available to you natively.

As mentioned previously, you also have the ability to try on avatars. As a note, when you do this, you’ll be the only one able to see the avatar. This way, though, you can get a feel for the avatar you’re trying on. Does it match your proportions? Does it fit your vibe? You can see instantly.

When the right avatar clicks with you, you can buy it using VRChat Credits. Once you do, it’s yours! You’ll find it under the “Purchased” list in the “My Avatars” tab.

Seriously: that’s all there is to it!

More Options, More Flexibility

We designed the Avatar Marketplace to help people get into an avatar that fits them easily. It’s also designed to make the process as easy as possible for creators – and we’ve been refining it behind closed doors with their input for the last few months.

Let’s get something out of the way first, though: no, this system isn’t replacing the “old way” of doing things. You’ll still be able to upload your own avatar via Unity. Avatar creators also will be able to still sell their wares on other platforms. That isn’t changing!

However, most folks really struggle to find (and then use) avatars that connect with them. Not only is finding the “right” avatar hard, but learning Unity is a pretty big barrier for many people, and it isn’t even an option for those who might not have access to a PC.

We want to make sure that everyone has an easy way to get an avatar! We also wanted to open up a brand new market for creators, allowing them to access a bunch of people they’ve never been able to connect with.

Instead of getting the source files from a third-party marketplace and uploading them yourself, you simply gain access to the avatar immediately. For both buyers and sellers, this means far less troubleshooting. One thing we heard from creators is that they wanted to spend less time helping people get their new avatar into VRChat and more time making new things.

Speaking of creators, let’s talk about their perspective a bit.

Selling Your Avatars on the Marketplace

Selling Avatars on the Marketplace is simple – it’s as easy as uploading any other avatar to VRChat! While you’ll need to go through the same onboarding process as other Creator Economy sellers, once you’ve done that, it’s essentially just submitting the avatar to the marketplace using the VRChat website, and waiting for our team to review the avatar.

As was the case with the initial launch of the Creator Economy, the marketplace will be limited to select sellers at first. This small cohort allows us to iron out any bugs, especially as more and more people buy avatars from the Marketplace.

If you’d like to be considered, please consider checking out the Creator Economy Application link in the description below. Likewise, if you’re a creator, you can apply to become part of the Creator Economy here!

What’s Coming Next

We intend to release the foundations of the Avatar Marketplace system shortly. After launch, we’ve already planned some immediate improvements — think tag search and filtering, along with other ways to make browsing through the avatars on the Marketplace a lot easier.

We also intend to simplify the buyer’s journey, smoothing out the purchasing process. We’ll also be continuously onboarding new sellers into the system, increasing the number of avatars actually in the Marketplace. If you don’t see something that fits you on day one, keep checking back! Also, feel free to drop a comment below describing what sort of avatar you’d like to see in the Marketplace.

We’ll continue to polish the experience up and expand upon the initial feature set, both for folks using the marketplace, as well as the folks selling on it.

Keep an eye out for the Patch Notes Video when Avatar Marketplace launches, as we’ll likely have more details about what’s coming next.

Post launch, we’ll likely update you on our plans via the bi-weekly Developer Update posts. So if you’re curious about what’s next, make sure you’re paying attention to those when they go out every other Thursday!

Conclusion

Finding the right avatar is a big part of VRChat – as many of you likely know, finding the “right” one makes a huge difference, and we want to make that process easier for everyone.

The launch of the Avatar Marketplace represents an important first step toward building a system that makes finding an identity in VRChat far, far easier for everyone, regardless of their technical ability.

If you have a question about the Avatar Marketplace as a creator, we strongly suggest checking out the FAQ (and, if it’s not covered, asking your question there).

Will VRChat prevent model creators from selling avatars on Booth, Gumroad, and other stores?

How will royalties and revenue shares work if multiple creators worked on a model?

Do model creators get royalties if addons are made their model?

It’s mentioned in the video that creators can still sell their products on other storefronts.

This seems really nice! One little annoyance, personally, would be that using Reset Avatar would reset all of the customization options, which are likely to be more complex and numerous as creators try to cater to larger audiences who have no way of customizing the avatars outside of the parameters. So, if there’s an error somewhere in the avatar’s animations, they’d have to rejoin to force a reload, or lose all of their personalization.

An easy fix could be adding a “save avatar state as default” button, or a separate set of buttons for saving and loading presets (outfits?). Either would be really nice to avoid having to select a dozen colors and clothing toggles every single reset.

Very excited to see more!

There are answers for you in the FAQ! Go check it out!

I have a question, since you can ‘try on’ avatars, what’s to stop people from making solo content / videos / streaming with any avatar in the VRChat avatar shop? Is there some clear indication visually even to the person trying it on that the avatar is a ‘demo’ version or something?

Is this buying an avatar or “licensing” an avatar that can be revoked at any point?

While I understand that owning the files might not be important to people who don’t know Unity at all and might not currently plan to start using it, it feels like not being able to actually get the files just helps create a barrier again.
This would mean that anyone that might want to edit their avatar would need to hassle the creators about the files, because it seems very unfair to expect them to buy an avatar twice if they one day want to start editing what they bought.

It also seems to imply that the purchaser doesn’t actually get to own the avatar if there’s no access to the files for it. If a creator would stop being part of the market for any reason would their avatars then simply vanish and all purchases be wasted?

Uneven virtual currency is also not a nice thing to do for something like this. If the purchasers cannot buy an avatar for exactly what it costs then it’s not a good purchasing system. Very recent EU guidelines in regards to virtual currencies and clarity in regards to them would be good to follow.

Edit 3: I would also hope that you would have some way of making sure that minors don’t use this system to buy way too much and you end up getting in trouble over some kid spending their parent’s savings on avatars or something.
Again, this is where the new EU guidelines on virtual currencies would be very good to follow. Not because it’s law, but because it’d protect both you and consumers from potentially predatory practices.

Blockquote Q: Why can’t you download source files from the Avatar Marketplace?
A: There are a few reasons why we decided to take this route. The short version, though, is that we felt it would be a better experience for both users and creators.

I personally do NOT like this. you don’t actually get anything, as its literally just licensing, not buying. If you don’t own the files you don’t own the asset. if this is successful, it abandons the whole concept of creativity that VRChat wants to support.

Really?
VR chat saw discord making little in app purchases and thought, “hmm? How can we take that, and make it 5 times worse?”
Does there even need to be an explanation why this is a terrible idea?

One thing that differentiates VR chat from other social games is their near unlimited selection of free and incredibly made community made avatars.
This is just another way they can farm money from little kids with mommys credit card.

Do better.

What happens if the avatar creator is banned or deletes the avatar? Or if the creator pushes an undesirable update to the avatar?

Do the avatars need to be fully made from scratch by the person selling them? I know a lot of people use avatars that are marketed as their own character but are actually a kitbash of existing parts, and I worry the creators of the original assets/avatars might not get their fair share.

Well if they do not get a fair share, anyone who’s made the asset can file a Cease and Desist/Takedown notice, but still needs addressed.

Please allow us to optionally include source files. The buyer doesn’t have to touch them if they don’t want to.

This will happen a lot:

  • Someone buys an avatar from the new marketplace.
  • Later, they decide to learn unity to customize their purchase.
  • They’re forced to pay AGAIN on a different marketplace because they couldn’t get the files. Creators have no automated way to verify vrchat marketplace purchases, so the buyer can’t even get a discount.
  • Creators will get tons of angry complaints about this.

A better solution for unity struggles could be a file that creators export from unity, and buyers upload through the website. That file can be included alongside the unitypackage wherever they bought the avatar. Of course, I know vrchat is trying to get a cut from transactions.

Also, this isn’t a solution for the difficulty of finding avatars. Most public avatars use assets from many creators, and those creators won’t be happy about their work being resold, obviously.

I see this only viable if you still have access to download the purchased avatar. By placing in the Creator companion a section, Given added login section, you can create a project using the specified avatar. Like the built-in repositories that are only accessed in login and can be added as a ‘Unity package’. These repositories could make the avatar unsell-able back on the marketplace using a little bit of code placed into the project upon importation of the project.

I think this is a good concept, but I have a few questions and concerns.

(I am not an avatar creator in anyway so don’t take everything I say as a pure fact. These are my own thoughts and opinions)

Questions:
If you buy a model do you get the files to it so you can customize it in unity? If not then I think some creators might stick to gumroad because one of the few reasons they upload the files in the first place is so people can customize the model themselves.

Concerns:
I feel like that this may lead to most, if not, all avatars being something you have to buy instead of being free which may or may not have a negative impact. I would be pretty mad if I wanted an avatar but the only way I can get it is by having to buy it. Not everyone has the money to buy everything and it could very well cause many people to quit VRChat and find something else.

What may start as an idea to support creators may end up as turning the game into something full of micro transactions.

Problems with VRChat +:
The main thing VRC+ does is give you extra slots for the already free avatars. So if most models become something you have to buy then what’s the point of keeping it if all the owned avi’s you have are stored in it’s own section with unlimited storage? I think with VRC+ should work kinda like Roblox premium where you get a certain amount of VRC credits a month.

Wait.

Isn’t the marketplace just avatar search with extra steps, and monetized?

This could of just been avatar search.

This is literally just avatar search but monetized.

If you disable and enable OSC in your radial menu, and the avatar doesn’t rely on OSC for any features, this resets things like physbones, etc without resetting menu’s.

I do not like the minimum price requirements and not getting the files.

I’m sorry, but none of the provided arguments are actual answers for why not to allow the creators to share the files:

This can coexist with files still being available for download for more advanced users.

Creators who feel this way can just choose to not share the files on the marketplace. They are not forced to create technical support Discord servers either. Most will still sell them on other platforms as files.

Most of the avatars are gonna still be sold on external platforms with files. If a creator is concerned about security they can just choose to not share the files.

I cannot see how any of these answers are actual reasons to not allow optional sharing of the files.
