Why Use Rim Lighting?

How come there are so many avatars that use rim lighting? It always looks weird to me so I usually disable it, but I’m curious as to why it’s usually a default on a lot of avatar bases.

if used right it can be a great way to add more depth to shading.
it’s typically best used to give the look of light bouncing off the side of something.
unfortunately the key phrase here is “if it’s used right” since most creators (most commonly e-boy and e-girl avatar creators) tend to do it horribly

here r some examples of one of my current projects with and without rim lighting so you can see the difference
(oh and for reference, there’s a smaller blue point light where the sphere is, a large off-white point light on the top right, and a white directional light set to 0.2 coming up from the bottom left)
