Has anyone here tried making a custom avatar in another app and bringing it into VRChat? Any pros/cons?

I have been experimenting with different character creators lately (outside of Unity/Blender) and was wondering if anyone’s had success importing those avatars into VRChat. Is it more trouble than it’s worth, or does it actually save time for beginners? Would love to hear what tools people are using or if it’s better to just go the Unity route.

Absolutely! This is a super common path for a lot of VRChat users, especially those who aren’t deeply familiar with Blender or Unity yet. I’ve definitely gone down this road myself, and it’s a mixed bag of pros and cons.

Yep, I’ve tried bringing in models from apps like VRoid Studio and Ready Player Me. It can save time for beginners, but you’ll still need Unity to get everything VRChat-ready, especially for custom gestures or shaders. Just make sure the base model is VRChat-compatible (Humanoid rig, polycount limits, etc.) or you’ll end up troubleshooting more than customizing!

Yep, I’ve done it! It’s fun customizing in other apps, but getting it VRChat-ready can be a bit of a grind. Worth it if you’re patient though!

Depends on the creator, but half the time you end up in Unity anyway fixing bones or shaders. If you are cool with trial and error, go for it. Otherwise, Unity’s the home base.
