Development Updates
Prints Are Coming!
It’s been awesome to see how excited everyone has been using Stickers and Sharing. Over 50% of VRC+ subscribers are using Stickers already. But we’re not done adding extra features to VRC+!
To that end, we have a new one coming very soon: Prints!
Prints are a unique way to share memories with other users in-game.
You can spawn them in game and place them around the world. Users without VRC+ can save and collect prints, but can not create or share them.
If you throw them with enough force and spin, they fly like a frisbee! Enjoy sharing memories and playing Print Golf with your friends.
Prints have a few unique qualities that are worth calling out, outside of being able to toss 'em around. First, Prints carry meta data with them (showing who took the photo, where it was taken, and when it was taken). They also can have a cutomized message written on them.
You can create them directly from the camera, or from your gallery. We also recognize that the gallery’s functionality was lacking, so we made improvements to make creating Prints and sharing photos within VRChat a much better experience.
We also moved the Gallery out of the VRC+ page and onto the User Profile, to allow non VRC+ users to collect Prints. While they won’t be able to create them, they can collect up to 20. VRC+ users, of course, can create them and can collect up to 64.
Finally, as a note, all images will upload in 1080p.
One-Time Purchases and World Stores
We launched the Creator Economy last year! You may have seen it in worlds like The Black Cat, where you can subscribe to a VRChat group to unlock cool perks. Thanks to your support, the Creator Economy has been very successful!
We’re launching two new ways to support creators soon:
- One-time purchases allow you to buy stuff from creators without monthly group subscriptions!
- One-time purchases can be permanent! Buy them once and keep them forever.
- Or they can expire like a group subscription. One-time purchases are flexible.
- This is the most highly-requested feature from creators in the Creator Economy. We appreciate your feedback!
- World stores allow you to browse a seller’s store by looking at their world in the VRChat menu.
- This is where you’ll (usually) find one-time purchases.
- You can also find one-time purchases directly inside worlds.
We’re looking forward to seeing how creators use these new features!
If you’d like to join the Creator Economy, please use the application form. We’re working on avatars and a new application form for the Creator Economy - stay tuned!
Additionally, it’s important to note that one-time purchases unlock a lot of new functionality within the Creator Economy. This is foundational piece of the system that will enable a lot of really cool future things, like an avatar marketplace (which you’ll hear about more next year).
Persistence is Coming VERY SOON – Creators, Help Us Out!
We are about to update the Persistent User Data Beta with some of our latest fixes to issues with PlayerObjects and PlayerData, and are continuing to work on getting the feature ready for live release soon.
In the meantime, we’d love to hear from you if you have something cool you’ve made with Persistent User Data. If you have a world/tool that uses the feature, make sure it’s listed in our Persistence Showcase thread.
You can follow the same format of the main post to make it easier for people to try. We’ll do our best to surface these examples in our various channels. Video demos particularly welcome!
Holiday Stickers
For Spookality, we changed the default Stickers to be seasonally appropriate. Well, we’re doing that again – but this time, with a holiday theme!
Look, I could sit here and talk about how cute they are, or I could just show you:
Seriously. Look at this guy! LOOK AT HIM.
like honestly what else do I need to add here???
Keep an eye out for them as the weather gets colder (or warmer, depending on where you are in the world).
Build & Test for Android
In October, we added the ability to launch test builds from the SDK directly to your Android device.
This means that testing a change on an Android world takes seconds to reload instead of having to reupload and join the world every time. This greatly reduces the iteration time when testing worlds for Android.
To get started testing your worlds on Android, follow the setup guide on the docs here.
Additionally, it’s worth noting that Quest and iOS support is on our roadmap.
Conclusion
That’s it for this week! Our next Developer Update will be… off schedule, given the holiday!
