Developer Update - 3 August 2023

Again, this isn’t a thread for bug reports, feedback, or technical detail on changes in patches or open betas! Please post to the Feedback boards!! If you don’t, then it is very likely your feedback or questions will be missed and will not be considered.

Is it possible to disable notification from exactly one post on canny? The report about being yeeted on load is a bit popular. Hopefully people can figure out how to reproduce consistently

Edit: it’s not possible

The worst part about this (even though I don’t want to say this because I like the feature), you can invite people to Invite+ through VRCX even if they didn’t request.

Though really, I think that just emphasizes the need for more granular instance rules/settings. I think I was going to make a feedback post for this, but the effort required to make good UI examples and explain the entire thing was too much.

Being entirely honest, UI color customization might actually be the thing to get me to buy into VRC+ lmao

In our defence, I’ve often seen these kinds questions get answered in dev update threads before now, and I didn’t consider the topic on hand a bug report, since all we where asking for was clarification/additional information.

But since you seem to think otherwise I’ve gone and made a canny Canny

It is nice to see things get more defined, Hats off to who ever did the Avatar scaling. This was much needed and well received by everyone iv encountered. :tada:

(Suggestions)
More badges. Id like to suggest more badges, perhaps badges that can be given by the community like but not limited to.
:gift_heart:Helpful badge
:people_hugging:Kindness badge
:laughing:Funny badge
And so on

I still would like to push for the VRC phone idea. Being able to text friends with in VRC would be fantastic. Even if it needs to be VRC+ only, im down for it.

Any ways keep up the good work and drink lots of water.

Loved the detailed explanation on scaling, thank you for sharing!

ui color customization! first thing i’m doing when i renew my subscription is making every single part of the menu the exact same shade of “unity broken shader” pink!

also, speaking of ui, radial menu update when? it looks a little bit out of place compared to the quick and main menus.

I’ve never really liked the interface color, I don’t know what it was about it but it made me feel a bit off when looking at a big green loading screen for 30+ seconds (I now just close my eyes or take off the headset while waiting)

It may be the reason I get VRC+, though it would be nice to see a couple presets available to non VRC+ users too (just like with background selection for the menu)

These are all quite nice and since you are planning on letting us change the UI colours with vrc+ in the future, have you guys considered letting people chose different options for loading screens? It would be really cool to allow old users to be able to use the old loading screen for vrchat again or change the background colour since it currently doesn’t really match any of the rest of the games UI. and the old loading screen idea is just cool since a lot of players do prefer it. Has there been any consideration for this idea?

I like this idea of community-granted badges! Make also a feature request on they’re canny

As long as they’re not self-assigned  Every FFXI/FFXIV player knows what Mentor status really means.

If a spiteful person joins and reports that means they didn’t give consent. You have to really trust the people you share intimate moments with.

Read guidlines for content creators as it talks about pronographic content

think of that section as additive to the first general guidelines

I just wanted to make a small general comment, referencing a certain video i saw, and something that has always been important, and i’ve been trying to think about how to express it. And that is the game’s overall state of polish. From what i’ve gotten a lot thus far, is that VRChat is mostly prioritizing feature development rather than polishing the experience (at all really) for most users, which affects playtime and retention overall. Ui being a maze, performance lacking, most things overall being rather clunky. The sentiment has been that VRChat wants to save all it’s polishing for the endgame (which may or may not ever come), when in actuality, polish is important in many stages along the way.

One big example is stuff like the old loading screen and UI style was a lot more inviting and elicited emotional feedback that made people want to get on and stay. The new loading and UI is very uninviting and alienating with it’s verbose nothingness and clutter. I’m not trying to criticize UI specifically, it’s more of an across the board thing. More people should be put in charge of polishing up stuff and adjusting features to make them better to use and easier to find.

From an outside perspective it’s hard for me to choose between saying too many or not enough cooks are in the kitchen…

They are working on the UI consistently either way. Adding search to settings is three things, it’s a feature, it’s a polish, and it’s admitting that there are too many options.

I haven’t seen a video of the old loading screen recently but I suspect that the current loading screen would make stuttering less obvious. I also suspect it’s assets are loaded at all times.

Just wanted to point out the game actually has had several features that fixed performance and comfort

Avatar culling based on nearest amount of people near you and hard culling on cull everyone past Xx Meters This isn’t just normal either they added he ability to even turn of the animators too drastically reducing lag.

And for comfort

Earmuffs mode is soooooo good

It’s really strange that VRC’s animation can’t be eliminated completely.

After testing, it loads the animator and runs it all the time, and the overhead is higher than the transpose.

A single animation layer with more than 20 people can generate about 3ms of overhead on multi-core (estimate 30-40+ layers * 20 people).

However, the animator that runs all the time affects not only the animation layer but also the skeleton transformation.

If you can turn on/off loading through security settings, you can reduce CPU cost by not looking at other people, but if you see people, it will still load and cause cost.

It’s just a pain in the ass to do it manually.

In total, the gain is about 6ms or more of overhead eliminated.

The difference is about 44fps vs 60fps.
