This is some rather speedy iteration! I look forward to hearing more about accessibility features in particular; As a disabled Quest user I was kinda getting left out before!
It is really great to have this constant communication, please keep it up.
I know I’m just one person, but I really really prefer to hear “we’re working on X. Oh sorry, X didn’t work, X is cancelled” over hearing nothing.
Avatar Hider
Why not use a very basic fixed-int 4x4 dither cutout for the placeholder meshes instead of an alpha shader? You can prevent visual bugs and overdraw, while still making them able to be seen through. It won’t look super pretty but it will get the job done well. Lots of games use dither logics for LoDs and distance culling.
That feels like a silly reason to be against it, if ya ask me, I don’t think that’s nearly as much of an issue as Tupper makes it out to be; it’s all in good fun. It’s already possible for people to rapid switch into avatars of vastly different sizes, adding avatar scaling wouldn’t really change that much, other than reducing the lag from having to change avatars so frequently just to change heights. Most people aren’t going to be rapidly re-scaling when trying to hold a conversation, they just want to be able to be the same size as the person they’re talking to.
This, and the whole ‘now I’m this size, now I’m that size’ issue, isn’t a thing such a feature would exacerbate much. People who have no social awareness do this already by getting oversized avatars to troll around with. Anyone with any tact would, much like the horizon adjust feature, be silly with it for a bit then stop when the novelty wears off.
That said, it would perhaps still be best tied to an avatar’s emote menu the same way props and such are. That is to say, more natively supported rather than having to go through a bunch of hoops to get it to work.
Still hoping for an avatar search function, because maybe in the early days of vrchat it wasn’t that important, but it’s about time that avatar worlds have been fazed out
I’m abit confused by what you mean by nearclip and farclip, could you possibly explain what you’re talking about exactly when you say nearclip and farclip for those of us that are confused? Thanks
Replying to someone who said this is a silly reason: It isnt. I have been around people using mods to change their size and its super annoying to, suddenly, being “stepped on” by giant people who just grew up astronomically and dont care about the people around them and stuff. That for me is also very uncomfortable.
If they add an official option to let you change sizes in a future, I’d wish they also gave us the option to not to see the size change and just keep seeing their avatar at normal size…
You can actually solve the problem by using ovr playspace mover! It lets you drag and move your headset in space compared to the game. Try it, I think you’ll love it.
To those inquiring about Avatar Search; There are several very delicate issues surrounding such a function. Yes, it would be simple to add, but no, it would not be a good idea to just slap it in. Just because an avatar is set to public use, does not mean it should be searchable. Easter eggs, game avatars, immersive world avatars, etc. Not everyone wants their avatars searchable in general either, and would rather distribute them personally.
Furthermore, such a feature would heavily exacerbate current issues regarding crasher avatars and avatar ripping (as the mods probably did when they worked). These issues should really be handled before such a feature is added.
Remember; Just because a mod did it first, doesn’t mean that it did it right. Some mods had to twist, break, or otherwise ignore conflicts that they caused with other things in order to function.
They are doing that actually.
Would love to see some other features that are especially useful for the roleplaying community, e.g. toggleable flight and noclip for certain worlds (as permitted by world creators), speed adjustments, and a dedicated avatar search (even if its paid for, to search for avatars would be invaluable). Additionally, an ESP and Teleport function (again, as permitted by world creators and/or instance hosts) would help tracking down individuals on large open maps far easier, avoiding some frustration from being unable to find friends or being incapable of managing an RP instance effectively.
Furthermore, some IK changes would be more than welcomed. Specifically in regard to movement animation. When FBT is enabled with movement animations, tons of avatars have a nasty habit to crane the head forward at a ridiculous angle making for a comical but immersion breaking sight. Furthermore, the spine going completely rigid when moving is also not preferable. Would be great to see some changes there. A good example of what that would ideally look like can be found in CVR’s IK system, where only the hips and below are animated when movement animations are initiated, whilst the upperbody is entirely dictated by trackers.
Requests aside, although I was extremely hostile toward the decision to implement EAC, steps are being taken to remedy the loss of mods, which is great. I’m actually pretty dang hopeful for the future of VRC with this new dev philosophy. I just hope that even more mod features are implemented such as the ones listed above.
The current selection is alright, but these other features would be an absolute boon for the RP community. And I guarantee a lot of those who left would come back pretty quick.
A surprisingly large amount of work had to go into this to ensure our UI handled the additional favorites without issue
Can that be elaborated on? Database pagination, caching, and a UI with pages (and left/right arrows) should suffice. Unless there are technical limitations due to previous design, which I would find odd since this really shouldn’t be that complex of a feature architecturally.
Instead of being able to grab the mirror at any time and having a Lock option in the Action Menu, we’ve removed the Lock option and replaced it with “Move”
I’ll have to test it, but this seems backwards. It is more natural to grab an item with a lock-able state than to use another hand and radial menu to stick it to your hand. The personal mirrors previously had an interaction distance you could set and you could lock them. This worked very well.
Forced uses 0.001m no matter what
I’m interested to see if people may abuse this in any large worlds to see through stuff. Though I’m guessing it may be a non-issue.
…or perhaps detect these CPUs and do the optimization automatically
Please allow it to be toggle-able and do not force automatic affinity.
To be clear, you can set the affinity with programs like Process Lasso, but you have to do it on boot when you see the EAC window. I’ve done it for a few other games. But having a built-in option would be nice.
That’s how it worked with the mod (and the way it was in the avatar 3 beta.) It wasn’t an option to just scale any avatar, it was just the game re-positioning and scaling your viewpoint when the base scale of the avatar was changed by it’s own animations.
This feels like a massive privacy concern waiting to happen, especially with noclip.
Regarding the first issue, a pretty simple fix would just be to allow avatar creators to tag whether a given avatar is visible to search queries or not.
As for avatar ripping, it’s already ridiculously easy to rip an avatar; there are literally websites that make it possible to rip the vrca file from the servers without ever even booting up the game. A search function is hardly going to make the problem any worse than it already is.
When it comes to crashers, even with a search function, they aren’t as easy to find as you might think; no one is going around openly labeling their crasher avatar as a crasher, you’d have to already know exactly what avatar you’re looking for. And it’s not like it’s that difficult to just make your own crasher atm. So, again, adding a search function is not going to make the problem any worse than it already is. Removing the anti-crasher mods thousands of people relied on to combat crasher avatars? Now that does make the issue worse.
How are things when it comes to facial/eye tracking
My favorite part is that no where in those screenshots does it actually mention:
- How often it would be abused
- What exactly the reasons are for it being “weird” or having “social problems”
What Tupper described is a malicious or mean user that is intentionally being a nuisance. This is no different than people screaming racial slurs in lobbies or invading the personal space of other users. Just because there is a slim potential for abuse or awkwardness doesn’t mean that it shouldn’t be implemented.
Yep, exactly. Not to mention that swapping avatars quickly actually can cause people to dramatically lag or even crash with a medium or good rated avatar.
This would be great, since it can be alongside the other safety features.
+1 to this
I was and would still agree, especially since I think it makes sense to have more complex things like TTS/TTT be a microservice alongside the main services. I originally thought it would overload OSC, but I forgot that some rather complex things already exist via OSC already, but I am not sure. Either way, microservices and redundancy are always a plus.
It really isn’t that complex of an issue. All you really need is a isPublic
boolean (or enum if you want shadowbans, unlisted or something) and set it to false for all existing avatars, where the avatar creator can choose to select it.
Also if anything, I think being able to search for the crasher avatars would make it easier for people to report abuse in case the crasher quickly leaves the world, or they are already crashed. This could be supplemented even further by allowing a “recent avatars” section where people can see avatars of worlds they’ve been in recently so they can go report the avatar.
There are a lot of ways to solve this problem. I am not exactly sure why everyone is so against it when really, most of the concerns or complaints can be relatively easily solved.
is it possible for the Calibration mirror to lock in place to the current direction your looking in? i have trouble lining up my hands because of my bad peripheral vision. so it would be nice to have the mirror not move while i’m trying to calibrate.
this would also be a bit more familiar because i’m so used to having a mirror not move while i calibrate.
next up, i dont know if it has been a issue for a minority of people, but during the last few times i’ve been in VRC, a lot of my friends have been crashing a lot. some of them not even on the beta. This happened to multiple people about 4-5 times in a single evening. none of us were doing anything special, and they didn’t have issues before the Big EAC update.
Next up, the gesture indicator is Super amazing, and a lot of people i showed it to loved it!
but i have a request, would it be possible to be able to customize the gesture icons per avatar?? currently you can just replace the PNG images in the game files and it works if you use only one avatar. but a lot of people i talked to said it would be very cool to have it as a per avatar feature.
Next up is the portal placement, super good feature, but i also have a request for this.
A feature i had with mods before with the portal placement was the ability to spawn a portal from a invite. these would only work with open instances like friends+ so you could have a bunch of poeple move into a new world easily instead of sending 5-15 invites. it was a amazing feature for when we needed to switch to a different world.
and finally is a feature request. i have no idea how this would work, but in chilloutVR, there is a feature to basically have a video call in the game!
i can imagine someone trying to call you and having a 2d head like in Metal gear to have a face to talk to. or a Star wars communicator projection in your palm. i think just having a 2d head shot would be less resource intensive, but the fantasy of just having the star wars communicator would be amazing.
i have no idea how to do a Voice to voice or how complicated/intense it would be, but if that is too complicated, it would be very cool to have a Instant messaging system in the game, sort of like texting your friends. this would be easy and fast to see if friends are available rather than sending a request.
of course this would have to have some sort of system in place to block people, or maybe only limit it to friends.
Thank you for the constant updates, these updates have given me more confidence that you are doing the right thing. while it doesn’t erase the extremely bad decision of implementing EAC before these very important feature updates. i’m very happy to see some of these features coming back slowly. i just hope now that you can keep the momentum up and continue to add these features as soon as possible. (and not take the multiple years at this point to finally add them)
