Developer Update - 23 April 2026

Welcome to the Developer Update for April 23, 2026.

Today’s featured world is the Space Jam Hub by NatlSpaceSoc.

Announcements

花見 !!

Hanami continues! You have until June 1 at 1PM PT to buy 'em up.*

As noted last time, it’s likely shop content will stay up for two months instead of just one in the future. Although it’s still up in the air! Just letting you know!

Pride Month is Coming Up! See You There?

We’re looking for LGBTQ+ community submissions for posters, logos, and floats (floats are invite only!).

Interested in submitting a poster or logo? Check out our Pride Guide for content specs and guidelines.

Here’s the form for Posters and here’s the form for Logos!

What Else Are We Planning for Pride?

We’ll be trying some new things during Pride, as well as bringing back the charity component for gifting/buying VRC+.

Keep an eye out on our socials on June 1 around 1pm PT for our kickoff!

Space Jam DVD, Space Jam DVD, Space Jam DVD…

ICYMI, we announced the winners for our Space Jam 3 World and Film categories!

Check out all of the amazing worlds featured in the world row until May 31 2026 and watch the 3 winners and 10 honorable mention films on our YouTube playlist.

As a reminder, the Strange Pear of Fine Arts is also hosting a contest in their Discord for Fine Arts submissions, open until May 1. You must be 18 or older to submit!

When’s the Next Jam?

We’re in the middle of planning the next Jam!

We’re leaning towards running an Avatar Jam and Film Jam this summer, where part of the prompt for the Film Jam is to use a winning avatar from the Avatar Jam.

When we have more information to share (most likely around the end of June), we’ll announce the jam theme and plans!

For now, rest up! Enjoy the Space Jam worlds and films!

User Profile Refresh!

You may notice the User Profile looks a little different as of last week, this is part of our ongoing progress to bring some cohesion between the web and client experience.

We’ve made a brand new profile page with a more modular approach, allowing us to be able to add and remove features with less friction. The new User Profile will continue to evolve and receive more improvements as we continue development!

The Friends list no longer squishes your content! This may be jarring for some folks, but this has been something we’ve wanted to change for a while now!

The User Card that you see throughout the site also received new functionality and visuals! You’ll notice these changes especially in places such as the user search results, block & mutes UI, and the members section of Groups! This new card will be making its way throughout the site.

Instance Announcements

We’ve been putting together a system for Instance Announcements! This allows group owners, or members with the new “Create Instance Announcement” permission, to send a notification to everyone in the Group instance they’re in. Think Group announcements, but specifically with an “@here” function like on Discord.

You even get a little live preview!

Once sent, these will act much like Group Announcements, but notify anyone in the instance whether they’re a member of the associated Group or not. Existing Group roles will need to have this permission added to make use of it.

Perfect for telling everyone to respawn, announcing the next DJ, suggesting everyone meet somewhere, or just generally communicate within an instance. If you have the permissions, you’ll find the new option under the Here tab on the Quick Menu, as well as the current location section of the Worlds tab on the Main Menu.

The particularly observant among you might’ve already noticed the new permission, sorry not sorry, but now you know for sure it’s on the way!

Expect to see it in a beta very soon.

New User Research Survey Has Launched!

User Research sent out a new survey today!

We emailed it to a select group of users. It’s a pilot measuring various high-level metrics that can be tracked over time. The goal is to understand how our scores for different categories improve over time. At the end of this survey period, we will assess whether we move forward with this in future months.

Please reach out to us if you have any questions!

Conclusion

That’s it for this week! See you again on May 7!

Instance based notifications are fuckin awesome, finally I wont get notifications for things happening in group instances I’m not in & don’t apply to me

The new friend list is annoying. I open the website to check who’s online and now it’s extra steps and even when it stays open it covers the main content which sometimes is just unnecessary big now.
The main content of pages has a max width of 1350px and so there’s now empty space on the left and right which previously was used to display the friend list on the side. What is the point here?
Maybe make the friend list collapse only below full hd. It’s perfectly fine on 1080p. And there’s big void of space now on 2k, 4k monitors etc.
Another thing is that it makes the main content off center

After using this for a few days while the profile was silently shipped, this has been a major pain point. Instead of squishing the content it now overlaps and makes it partially unreadable which is… pain.

I edited the CSS to anchor home-content to the left, removing overlap.

Empty space WHILE overlapping content hurts my soul.

This will streamline running events so much! Some groups won’t have to use posts now to spam everyone whether they are in the group instance or not.

To add on a bit:

It feels right on a smaller browser window where both the left and right bars are collapsed. Clicking on any link in either bar closes that bar and refocuses the main content, this is great!

On a larger display however, the left side bar locks itself as visible and pushes the main content to the right. Since the friends bar (on the right) is now an overlay it is very inconsistent that the left bar acts functionally differently than the friends bar (left pushes content, right does not).

i was in B club this weekend where they kept using the global announcement to bug you to join the group ever 15 - 20 minutes, hopefully there is a cool down on this and a way to disable them on the viewers end

It feels a bit ridicules to have that be an overlay, especially on an ultrawide lol

Agree’d, the only people this benefits are users who have monitors with 1920px or less horizontally. It would be nice if there at least was an option to pin the friend list open.

I don’t like this. I prefer to have the friends list always on so I can see active instances and my favorite friends at the same time. But now I have to toggle it on and off depending on what I’m looking at.

These new features and updates are great. Keep it up!

eeyyyyy My lil’ RIFT hedgehog avi getting some screen time love in the dev update!

But also great to see instance announcements get implemented!

I don’t think the avatar in the thumbnail is Airi? unless its heavily modified…

I agree with the sentiment that the friends list overlapping can be a pain sometimes.
I think an option which allows users to “pin” their friend list via a single button click, to no longer have the friend list overlap, but still able to collapse when wanted, would do the trick.

instead of nagging about the usual, I’d like to ask when the Quick Menu page will be organized like the rest of the UI? attached below is the proof-of-concept I made last year.

(don’t worry! Gift VRChat+ is still at the top… although in hindsight the Avatar and Moderation categories should probably be swapped.)

I’m still pushing for a new CharacterController or a Station to MAKE into a CharacterController so we can do more interactions with the player in UDON like Gravity systems for future space jams!

Website is improving, but it wont allow me to rep another group, so that’s broken right now. Or rather it changes it in VRC but doesn’t update on the website correctly until you start VRC it seems. Instance announcements are awesome but should work for non-group instances too. I hope I get the survey!

Will the instance notifications automatically dismiss if I leave the instance? That’s one thing that bugs me with the current system, admins will send a “gather for photo!” group notification that’ll persist in my inbox for days.
