VrChat Binary Error

I am on a quest 3 and am using steam link to run VrChat and anytime I try and start it, it always gives me the error “could not locate game binary”. When I try to validate files it says that 1 file was not validated and steam attempts to redownload it. When this happens I get a “disk write error”. It only works ONCE when I uninstall and reinstall, but after I play the game that one time, the next time I try the issue occurs again. This problem only happens with VrChat too, other games like Pavlov run perfectly fine.

I’ve tried:
checking read only in properties
uninstalling and reinstalling (temp fix)
checking and restoring files in command prompt
Giving full control to the admin profile
moving which SSD the game is saved to (I have two disks)

No matter what I try nothing seems to work, I don’t want to have to uninstall and reinstall anytime I want to play. Can anybody help me out here?

If the game binary is going missing, something is making it go missing. Yes, it could be a problem with an SSD, but I think it’d be more noticeable than just one single program not wanting to run. It’s likely a false positive. Virus scanner see’s a file it doesn’t recognize, and notices that the program will talk to servers on the internet, and even download some files from them! (worlds and avatars)

Here are the choices

  • Wait a day or two, then ask Steam to validate files
  • Try and tell your virus scanner to knock it off
  • Could try switching vrchat to/from open-beta channel, see if its also detected as a virus
