So what happened is, some files were deleted and recovered then added to my C disk then I moved them to my E disk/USB and now I’m trying to add as existing project in vrchat companion creator and it gives shows me the “object reference not set to an instance” in logs. I’m not sure what to do, tried looking it up on how to fix it but not getting great results about it. Please help ![]()
Is Unity or VRChat Creator Companion giving you the null reference error message?
Are you able to create and open a new project from VRChat Creator Companion?
Does your project have all the dependencies configured in VRChat Creator Companion? The VRChat Creator Companion expects Packages/vpm-manifest.json to exist in the project.
If you’re able to open the Unity Editor for the project, does Assets → Reimport All work for you? (Consider making a backup first.)
For further help, can you replicate the issue again and provide the exact steps you’ve taken previously to replicate the issue on a new project?
Consider your best move may also be a nuclear option to copy the Assets/ and possibly Packages/ directories to a new project. The Library/ directory and its cache should not be copied over.
Since the files were deleted and then recovered, there’s a possibility that some of the Unity project files are missing or corrupted. A few things I’d check:
1. Check the project folder. Make sure you’re adding the actual project root, which should contain folders such as “Assets”, “Packages”, and “ProjectSettings”. In particular, check whether “Packages/vpm-manifest.json” exists and isn’t empty, since VCC expects that file.
2. Try moving a copy back to your internal drive. Since the project is currently on an E: drive/USB, copy it to a folder on your C: drive and try adding it from there. This helps rule out issues with the external drive or its file access.
3. Test whether VCC can create a new project. If a new project opens successfully but this one doesn’t, that points more toward a problem with the recovered project itself.
4. If Unity can open the project, make another backup and try “Assets → Reimport All”.
5. If the original project is damaged beyond repair, create a new project of the same type through VCC and migrate the entire “Assets” folder, including the “.meta” files. Reinstall the necessary VRChat SDK and third-party packages through VCC rather than copying the old “Library” cache.
Ok tysm I am going to try those options and get back to you about it if i succeed or not
Ok tysm for the advice I will also give this a shot
So I found out my soul problem to all this, since I accidentally deleted then recovered them, then put them back in my E drive once they were all on my C/ External drive. I can no longer open anything up. I copied the files and moved them back into C but everything is still broken and if you have any ideas on how to fix broken files and photos it would be nice to know so I can try and fix it ![]()
