Accessories

UGC Accessories - Coming Sooner Since They Don’t Use Udon?

Q: Since accessories don’t use Udon, I’m assuming they’re not under the same strict checks and regulations as items. Could we be seeing UGC accessories much sooner?

A: It’s probably more likely you’d see UGC accessories before UGC items, partly for that reason but also because accessories are just simpler overall. That said, there are still open questions we need to answer first - mostly around performance, which we covered in the accessories announcement video. Pretty likely it’ll happen, but we’re not 100% certain. It’ll probably follow the marketplace path rather than being a free-for-all upload system - we want to maintain some bar of quality. The totally-open upload model like avatars and worlds is probably not what’s coming.

Can Accessories Be Equipped on Both Wrists at Once for Symmetry?

Q: With the new accessory bundle, can it go on two of the main wrist slots at once so your outfit can be symmetrical?

A: Yes.

What Determines Accessory Render Distance, and Can It Be Extended?

Q: Will you please make accessories appear further away? What determines at what distance an accessory shows up? I know they show up at different distances.

A: The system is both distance-based and count-based. The more people and accessories present in an instance, the shorter the render range becomes - it’s all in the name of performance. You always see your own accessories. Accessories can also LOD (swap to lower quality models at range) rather than just disappearing entirely. If you think your range is way too short in a specific situation, reproduce it and post a feedback item.

More Print Storage?

Q: I want to ask for more print storage. I’m throwing away tons of important memories with my friends.

A: Preaching to the choir. The images are only 1080p, so storage isn’t the actual constraint - it’s UI management. Our current UI is built around scrolling through a limited number of items. One day.

SDK & World Creation

Blender Tips and Tutorials for Making Avatars From Scratch?

Q: I’ve recently been learning Blender and wondering if the devs have any tips or tricks for making avatars from scratch, and any particular tutorials or plugins worth knowing about.

A: The classic starting point is the donut tutorial from Blender Guru - good for getting the fundamentals down. Important caveat: character modeling is widely considered the hardest form of modeling - the final boss. Hard surface modeling, static props, and environments are all more approachable. When starting out in Blender, resist the temptation to jump straight to characters.

Will the SDK Ever Upgrade to a Newer Version of Unity?

Q: Will the VRChat SDK ever upgrade to the newest version of Unity?

A: Yes, eventually - and actually, this is a stream leak: we’re currently running a Unity 6 build in closed beta testing right now. It’s still on the built-in render pipeline, no URP or anything fancy - it’s a pretty straightforward upgrade. It’s been very stable in testing so far, and we’re seeing some positive performance reports from it. More performance improvements are also on the way. You heard it here first.

Can the Character Controller Support Gravity Systems and Wall-Walking?

Q: World creators want more movement opportunities like other platforms with gravity systems. Can we get this for the new character controller?

A: The old prototype character controller did actually support some of this, though it was incomplete. Wall-walking / rotating gravity specifically is hard not because of the character controller but because of our IK implementation. When your character is sideways, your real-world gravity is no longer aligned with the in-world gravity, and that messes up a lot of IK calculations. It’s genuinely hard to pull off.

Can the Pen Item Write Properly Over the Network? Can It Come Back to the Store?

Q: Is it possible to make the pen item actually write well over the network? I’ve been using it to communicate with my deaf friend and it’s really hard to read. Also, could it just be in the store as a permanent thing to buy?

A: Heard, preaching to the choir. The core technical issue is that you currently can’t properly sync time on the pen implementation. QVPen (the community gold standard) works around this with a clever network playback trick that is architecturally a bit questionable but gets the job done. Upcoming client updates will fix the underlying blocker, which removes the main obstacle to building a better pen. Until then, if you need to communicate reliably with deaf or hard-of-hearing friends, use a world pen or the chatbox. Our current pen is more of a toy.

Can Groups Get an API to See Who’s in Group Instances for Moderation?

Q: Can we get an API for groups to see who’s in group instances for moderation purposes?

A: Good feedback - post it on the feedback boards. We don’t document our API publicly so the endpoint might already exist, who knows.

Any Plans for VCC Updates?

Q: Any plans for VCC updates?

A: Yes - we’ll keep updating it. The people who work on it also work on other things, so it moves at its own pace, but it’s not abandoned.

Platform & Infrastructure

Rapid Fire Feature Status: Avatar Optimizer, Avatar 4.0, Performance Rating, Soba

Q: Rapid fire update on some features that haven’t been mentioned in a while - avatar optimizer, Avatar 4.0, new performance rating system, Soba.

A:

  • Avatar optimizer: On hold, for now.

  • Avatar 4.0 / Avatar Controller: Paused.

  • New performance rating system: Not in the near future.

  • Soba: Getting worked on.

Is Regionalizing VRC+ Subscription Prices a Possibility?

Q: Is regionalizing the price of VRC+ subscriptions possible? For some countries, the price is quite high on a monthly or yearly basis.

A: It’s something we’ve been actively looking into, but it’s surprisingly complicated - staying consistent across all platforms, accounting for a huge number of regional variables, it’s a lot. We’re continuously exploring it but can’t make any promises. Much harder than it looks from the outside, and one of the first things that came up internally when we considered it.

Plans to Increase Default Instance Capacity?

Q: During New Year’s Eve there were larger instances. Is there a plan to increase default instance capacity?

A: Not at this time, though we’re playing with the idea as we try out new systems that improve performance. Performance problems don’t just disappear when you raise the cap - when it hurts, that means you’re reducing the experience for everyone inside. We’ve pushed up to around 250-260 before things started degrading, and hit 400 in some tests before it became basically unusable. There is a testing group for when we’re ready to push on this seriously.

Instance Announcements via the API

Q: For the new instance announcement functionality, will we be able to make announcements via the API?

A: We don’t document our API publicly. We think there might not be an endpoint for this yet, but if you can figure it out via the undocumented API, that’s on you.

Can You Filter to Quest-Compatible Worlds While on PC?

Q: Is there a reason we can’t filter to Quest-compatible worlds while on PC? We have to skip a lot of PC-only worlds.

A: There is or should be an option for this. We’d love more filtering options broadly - the dream is something like a Steam server browser where you can filter by almost anything and browse instances by name. There are things being worked on that will result in a pretty different picture of how you explore VRChat. Coming eventually.

Why Are Global PhysBone Colliders Restricted to 4?

Q: Why are global PhysBone colliders restricted to 4?

A: Performance, mostly. You have to check a global collider against every other collider every single frame, which gets expensive fast. The more specific reason is that PhysBones are fully multi-threaded, and accurately counting collisions across multiple cores in parallel is way harder than it has any right to be. It’s simpler and more predictable to just cap it upfront than to try to count mid-execution in a parallel context.

AMD 9950X3D2 for VRChat - Worth It?

Q: Any thoughts on the AMD 9950X3D2 CPU for VRChat? It has dual X3D L3 cache on both CCDs.

A: Tupper looked into this. The 9950X3D2 has 3D Vcache stacked on both CCDs unlike the original 9950X3D (one CCD). The problem is you still can’t efficiently share work across the CCD boundary, so the only real gain would be from shoving VRChat onto the second CCD while the OS and other apps live on the first. The improvement would probably be trivial - maybe 5-8% over the original 9950X3D at best. Might be worth it to some people, but the general advice is don’t build a new PC right now, deal with what you’ve got. Updated PC guide is at dtupper.com.

Trust & Safety Content

18+ Gated Verification on Adult-Themed Avatars, Stickers, and Prints?

Q: We have 18+ gated instances. Why not the same 18+ gated verification on adult-themed avatars? Is that possible? And could the same apply to adult-themed stickers and prints?

A: Yes, it’s possible. We don’t have it yet. This is all part of what we used to call content gating - same answer applies to stickers and prints, it’s all one system. We just don’t have it right now due to various complications, but the intent is there.

Why Are Avatars Being Taken Down Even If They’re Safe for Work?

Q: Why are avatars being taken down if most are safe for work?

A: The most common reason for a safe-for-work avatar going down is licensing. Avatar creators put licenses on their work, and if someone files a DMCA claiming a license violation, we’re legally obligated to follow the DMCA process and take it down. The person whose content was taken down can file a counterclaim, but at that point it gets into legal territory we can’t give advice on. Other reasons include rule violations like hate speech. If it’s not NSFW and not violating rules, licensing is almost certainly the reason.

Discovery & Social

World Curation Lists, Ratings, AI Content Marking, and Filters?

Q: Will you ever implement client-integrated world curation lists and ratings, along with AI content marking and filters?

A: Breaking it down -

  • Curation lists: Enthusiastically yes. We want people to be known for curating worlds, want shareable lists with notes and rankings that others can browse.

  • Ratings: Complicated due to abuse vectors, but you can’t avoid features just because someone might misuse them. Maybe one day.

  • AI content marking: Best use case would be suggesting tags for worlds, though creators should stay in control. We’d probably do suggestions at most. Could also be useful for AI-disclosure tagging.

  • Filters: Things we’re working on will change how you explore VRChat in a fairly significant way.

Community / Off-Topic

Why Does Tupper Keep Using the Quest Pro If He Complains About It?

Q: Why does Tupper keep using the Quest Pro when all he does is complain about it? Is it a flex?

A: No flex. The Quest Pro’s face and eye tracking at this fidelity level is unmatched - no other headset does it as well right now, and we’ve tried most of them. Tupper tried the Samsung Galaxy XR at FWA and liked it, but it’s $1,700.

Any Unannounced Features You’re Excited About but Can’t Talk About?

Q: Please say there are any unannounced specific features coming to VRChat that you’re excited about but can’t talk about.

A: Yes.

What One Feature Would You Like to See in VRChat That Doesn’t Exist Yet?

Q: What one feature would you like to see in VRChat that doesn’t yet exist?

A: Multiple answers from the team. Tupper wants networking modes - tag your world as a genre (FPS, platformer, etc.) and have the networking qualities adapt accordingly. Another wants web-based VRChat via WebXR, full VR-capable. Someone wants better foundations across the board - audio, IK, and networking improving continuously. Another had a more jokey answer involving a magic wand to blow up people’s headsets. A video player item you can pop out at any time also came up. There’s also genuine enthusiasm for another IK iteration pass when the right people have time.

Where Can I Make Feature Suggestions?

Q: Where can I make suggestions for new VRChat features? One that comes to mind is a portable boombox/video player.

A: feedback.vrchat.com (currently running on Canny, though we’ve been trying not to say “Canny” since that might not be accurate in a couple years).

Have You Heard of Paper Tracker Face Tracking for Quest 3?

Q: Have you heard of paper tracker face tracking for Quest 3 from China?

A: Heard of it, seen some tweets. That’s about the extent of our awareness - someone may have done a video on it.

What’s the Next Music Event or Club Meetup?

Q: What’s the next music event or club we’re meeting at?

A: Hard to say without knowing the asker. That said, Tupper is genuinely annoyed to have missed Concrete, which apparently ran up to 140 people and held up well. Notable finding from that test: when you enforce avatar performance limits in an instance, you can push numbers quite high and frames stay tolerable. Concrete Dunes is a large map, so avatars far away get heavily mipped out and the avatar culling system barely has to do any work.

Any Group Events Coming Up for the Rest of the Month and June?

Q: Any group events you’re looking forward to for the rest of the month and in June?

A: Mostly playing it by ear. There are so many great community events at this point that it’s really just a matter of choosing what to go to.

Note: First stream back after a couple of weeks. Flare was absent from this stream.
