Hidden Mutuals?

Since the Mutuals feature was rolled out I’ve encountered several times people with one or several counts of “Hidden” Mutuals.

What does that actually mean? When are Mutual friends or groups flagged as “Hidden” to other users?

I’ve not seen this myself (I’ve never used the feature), but I suspect it has something to do with opt-outs.

There’s two ways to opt-out:

  • Show Mutual Friend and Group Connections at https://vrchat.com/home/profile settings
  • Show Mutual Connections setting in app: Settings → Comfort & Safety → Safety → Show Mutual Connections.

There’s also a funny bug (?) where sometimes an opted-out user is seen as having mutual connections on, but with reported 0 mutuals.

Don’t tell my friends, but I have exactly one friend hiding mutual connections right now, so when I see a hidden mutual I know exactly who it is.

Wait, so the options are not for showing Mutual Groups & Friends, but for being shown as Mutual Friend? That’s some weird and confusing wording if true…

I don’t know how it works or if there’s any difference (I don’t use the feature myself, I’m opted out), but if you feel like the text is unclear and needs a clarification, submit feedback at https://feedback.vrchat.com/.

The in-client tooltip for the Show Mutual Connections setting says (when opted out):

Mutual Connections disabled. You won’t show your mutual Friends and Groups to others when they view your mutual connections.

That text is even more confusing. It implies that your Mutuals won’t show up when viewed. But I was talking about a situation when somebody’s Mutuals would show up, except some would only show up as “Hidden Mutual”.

Are you sure we are talking about the same thing?

Does opting out of showing your Mutuals to other people also “propagate” by making you show up as a “Hidden Mutual” when viewing other people’s Mutuals?

If you opt out of showing mutual connections and I look at your profile, mutuals will be empty

If I then look at a mutual friends profile, who has their connections shown, I will see a hidden mutual

I just want to note that I’ve never seen “mutual connection” listed more than once. I can’t guarantee with 100% confidence that vrchat will only list one hidden mutual, but I’m reasonably sure this is the case.
