I am curious (and a bit upset) and the recent patch notes seeing that fallbacks are going to be phased out in favor of imposters.
Maybe I’m in the minority here, but I’ve always liked fallbacks much more than imposters. They look better and allow for some limited interactivity.
I’m curious if anyone knows what VRChats reasons are for getting rid of a system with the only limitation is that it requires a custom, more stripped back avatars.
I made this original post when the update was hot off the presses and, to be honest, so was I. I had just spent several days testing and making sure that my custom fallbacks worked as expected. It felt a bit personal with the timing of things.
However I know that isn’t the case, so let’s take this from other angles that I’ve since learned. Unfortunately, they all boil down to the same point: It feels like a bad decision to start removing fallback functionality before the imposter system is “done”. What do I mean by that?
- There is still no way to view or manage the creation of imposters in the client. And now there’s no way to manage fallbacks either? It almost feels like the client is taking second seat to the website, which seems … very wrong.
- Yes, imposters work “fine” (more on that in the next points), but only for most, basic shaped avatars. I know a number of people that have avatars that are anything but basic. In fact, even the imposter creation page linked on the website mentions that it only supports humanoid avatars and that generic ones still “will be supported later”
- I’m not just raging just to rage. I tried last night after the update to make impostors for most of my avatars. Counter to my point above, with only one exception, most of my avatars are pretty basic in shape with humanoid skeletons. Despite that, I still had one that wouldn’t generate. My main one, unfortunately. Tried several times with slightly different imposter settings. No luck. But the biggest issue to me is that I have zero idea why it doesn’t work. The imposter generation process is so obscure that there is nothing that I have to go off of and no place I know of the look for more detailed logs to figure out what is wrong or what it doesn’t like. As it stands, I literally can’t have an imposter even if I want to l.
This is not to mention that as I said before, I heavily dislike the artifact heavily look of imposters (even if they’ve improved since the start) and would much prefer fallbacks for myself even if they all worked, which they currently don’t.
