Developer Update - 30 July 2026

I don’t like that banners/pics/icons taking up 33% of the real estate of the UI now. I understand why you guys did it, because you want to sell customizations for it like Discord does… However no one enjoys looking at peoples customized profiles, only the people customizing their profile enjoy that, and then get annoyed looking at everyone elses.

Hey there,
I was wondering if there is any update for such things as user-created items or accessories. I think a year ago, you’ve talked about internal discussions on how and if to give users the ability to create items.
I do understand the need to make money and become profitable, but I feel a bit left out as an avi creator. The only significant addition throughout the last year I remember (apart from performance improvements) is the raycast. Which is very nice. But when items were first introduced, I was hoping to have the ability to upload my own sometime in the future.
It’s very tedious to create a copy of my avatar for each new asset I create and then do the same again if I want to switch avatars. I would love any kind of independent item or accessory.
I know I’m over-exaggerating, but it feels like every update is just another way to sell us cosmetics.

don’t forget the intentional disregard for accessibility since that would upset those who paid for UI customizations. You can disable animations but not improve readability.

Atleast we know it’s delayed rather than just no info on it at all.

I’m looking forward to when that system is implemented because it would help more than people think

Moderation tools exist. If someone’s being toxic, mute them, block their avatars or just block them entirely. When they see users start disappearing an instance that’s full of people in the world finder, they won’t have anyone else to be toxic to and leave. It’s a communal effort but the best way to deal with it is to not engage and use the moderation tools we have available. Get them to nuisance rank and their experience will be bad enough to get them off the platform.

Regarding this developer update:
I really like the idea of the new style for profile, nameplates, and nametags in-game; I finally don’t need to use groups to display a banner above my nameplate anymore, but instead have it in my profile banner.

My personal main criticisms with this update:
As someone who has 12,183 hours of playtime on VRChat and 7 years of experience, existing, and being on this platform as a VRChat member, I have a decent qualification to back up my criticisms, I don’t mind the idea of this update; I think it’s pretty cool, but I at least have to address my criticisms as well, your “Addressing some of the biggest concerns as you go”, like are we gonna address the performance issues on PCVR like I have a pretty good modern gaming pc and I lag like crazy in PCVR, especially with large lobbies with people who use unoptimized avatars, and on creators we still lack creative tools, shader options for materials & features for Android/IOS, such as lights and audio sources on Android/IOS.

But your more focused on a UI Update right now, that does nothing to enhance, improve or make the experience better in any capacity what-so-ever, other than make your UI/Profiles look prettier, and the regarding the Profile, Name & Icon effects, it really isn’t a necessarily horrible thing to add but it’s not original, discord has already done this, it’s not exactly original, or revolutary.

I’ll also provide my own feedback & suggestions:
As I wouldn’t be giving any constructive criticisms if I didn’t provide some feedback, solutions, or suggestions to at least help give an idea on how to improve the platform.

Suggestion 1:
Add more performance/avatars options for blocking or hiding avatars that have High Texture Memory Size, and the set allowed of Avatar Light Limits for avatars,
* similar to Blocking Avatars with High download sizes or Uncompressed file sizes, but for Texture Memory; a lot of people do not optimize their texture memories, or atleast don’t know how to optimize there Texture Memory properly, which this eats up a lot of VRAM, and system resources. Most of us only have 16-32 GBS of RAM, and 16 GB of GDDR7 VRAM on a decent modern computer or even lower, and with the world texture memory, post-processing, Udon Background Processing & a bunch of avatars with lights, high texture memory sizes, and such, which use a lot of computer resources, that stacks, and adds up really quickly in large worlds, with large instances of people.

Suggestion 2:
Add more features for Android/IOS, such as audio sources and light sources.
*
Like, put them behind Android/IOS very poor avatars, where they are blocked by default and can only be seen when it’s forced to be shown, like you already have similar systems that you have put in place that you can use for very poor avatars on Android/IOS, so why not just have audio sources, and light sources make the avatar performance rank both instantly make your avatar performance rank “Very Poor”? And also limit them on Android/IOS by having them be adjusted to safe limits, like how you have it with VRC Audio Sources, but on Android/IOS. All I ask is at least 1 Audio Source & 1 Light Source to be the max hardcoded limit on Android/IOS. :folded_hands:

Optional Suggestion:
Don’t add profile, icon, or nameplate effects,
but keep the new User Profile style the way it looks in the photos; the new User Profile UI looks fine as it is!

Conclusion:
This is just my own criticisms regarding my experience with VRChat. I love VRChat as a platform, infact it’s literally a way I make money by creating avatars & assets for VRChat, but it definitely needs a performance update in some way, shape, or form. But please take my criticisms as constructive; my intentions are not hateful, but to provide my own complaints & criticisms, and I hope my criticisms help provide ways to improve the VRChat platform!

Has anyone made a custom world yet where you can input an untrusted URL for an image, take out a camera and set an icon this way without VRC+? Bonus points if it’s not Popcorn Palace.

This arbitrary restriction is silly.

Now that icons aren’t a paid-only feature, can we get an option to hide them? I’d have just the username if you let me.

Is having a toggle for pronouns too much to ask for, it’s the only piece of information you can’t turn off, and knowing someone’s pronouns is like a piece of information you need once; it doesn’t need to take up 50%. I’ve seen a fair number of people remove their pronouns because it makes their nameplate look better. Anyway, just add a toggle…

I honestly think it’s an aesthetic mistake to put the pronouns in the same line as the user name. It should be on a separate line below the online status, or a line above the username. Either way putting it next to the username crowds the nameplate.

Adding to the topic of pronouns, I don’t think they should be on the nameplates at all. I was pretty vocal about how I thought they were an unsightly addition of clutter to the previous nameplates when they were added. While they are definitely handled better now, I would like to see the pronouns in the expanded nameplates, not the regular “closed” nameplates.

Who needs soba when we can just have more pronouns :joy:

This design should make everything in the profile a lot more readable at a glance.

N…No…

Persistence Reliability Improvements & Intermittent Saving

Thank you so much.

I think cosmetic customization for nameplates and profiles is perfectly fine as a monetization feature.

That said, the new profile simply shows less information at a glance than before, making it harder to read. In particular, it’s very inconvenient that the note is so often hidden and requires scrolling to see.

As for the nameplate, the group banner has become much harder to distinguish, and I’m honestly not sure what the design is trying to achieve. (The previous design was perfectly good!)

The friends list also loses a long-standing piece of UI consistency: friends are no longer highlighted in yellow. What used to be a clean list with simple status colors has instead become dominated by the default banner colors, making it much harder to scan.

I’d really appreciate it if the focus could shift back toward usability, rather than changing things for the sake of change.

Please don’t add the Discord “what if you can’t read the profile” decorations or the flashbang.

With this UI thing, what irritates me is that when I open up the hand menu and click on a friends name, I don’t see where they are until I click the button to open a larger menu.

Click a friend, see where they are and then join.

Actually, you can. If you go to your Action Menu > then Options > then Action Menu > you can disable Flick Select.

What it essentially does is force you to select first and then press the trigger to actually confirm your action. Personally, I’ve had Flick Select turned off for the entirety of my time playing VRChat.

It actually makes you think: ‘Should I select this or not?’ It stops you from toggling something on and off by accident if you didn’t want to toggle that thing, or vice versa.

I really like the new UI overall — the old one felt quite clunky, like things had just been tacked on over time. Now you can actually take everything in at a glance, like the quick badges showing where a person is (e.g. easily seeing when someone’s in your current session).

That said, a couple of accessibility suggestions:

  1. Contrast and Visibility — Some of the contrast could use adjustment, as certain elements may be hard to read for people with visual impairments or in bright lighting conditions.
  2. Profile Layout — I’d suggest making the main profile info a bit larger and repositioning some elements so they don’t overlap or compete with the Profile Decorations. This would improve readability and prevent clashes with wilder decoration colours down the line.

Thanks for the continued iteration — looking forward to seeing where this goes!

I admit, I am not really a fan of the new UI, it just seems very cluttered.

The customization features are a nice bonus, but it would be nice to have the option to hide/disable them.

Performance is already not the greatest, even on newer hardware, so these sorta cosmetics, being animated and all, could cause more issues, especially in more crowded instances.

Also, thank you for making the PFPs free, been hoping we would get that.

SDK release 3.10.5-0?

Seems to suggest global physbone colliders can be configured to affect others only in the upcoming SDK release.
