Developer Update - 18 January 2024

foveated rendering please

I don’t have anything to add right now, but I’ll make note of this and see if I can maybe dig something up for the next (video) dev update. No promises, but I’ll see what we can share.

I think it goes without saying that there’s a lot we want to do with CE, and that we’re certainly aware of how many avatar creators would like a better and more efficient system to sell their wares.

It’s something that we’re thinking about pretty intensely, for sure.

Well this the best news I’ve heard so far.

Cool!
Letting us know how to properly program NPCs that chase players around with the current SDK, and how to do velocity-based damage or charging up something like a personal forcefield or running-booster power up by swinging our arms real fast to make us move faster in a game would be wonderful if there was someone I could talk to about that or a book I could buy with this information in it! I REALLY want to make an awesome game world for VRChat!

ALSO, crucial stuff like how many players can we have in a world versus how many NPC foes and at what level of detail max for a smooth game experience. stuff like that! I think it’s sad that some of the best game worlds with NPCs in VRChat are limited to 4 players per a world.

I’ll admit, I understand that the creator economy and money changing hands is a thing that’s healthy overall, I’m still a little saddened to see a lack of talk on things that aren’t related to it.

One of the things asked here is what would get people going on creating more, and I think one of the big things for me right now -that I’m definitely not the first or last to think about - is a Vrchat replacement for constraints, like we now have physbones instead of dynamic bones.

I’ve been told by a few people who’ve looked into constraints that they have more performance impact then expected, which is why they aren’t allowed on android builds, but it makes making an avatar a bit more complex if you want it on both platforms.

As someone who’s admittedly not a programer, I’m kind of surprised to hear physbones get a pass but constraints being too high performance impact, since physbones do some weight/movement calculation, rather then take data directly from another source. I do hope I’m right when I assume whoever is responsible for physbones could do the same for constraints.

Right now, when making an avatar work for both, not having constraints mean that if you want a prop on your avatar, you need multiple of them for it to work as sitting somewhere on the avatar, as you can’t just move the singular object around

This feels like a more choppy experience then it smoothly being one object.

That’s just one of several things (like twist bones, armored kneepads etc) that hugely benefit from having systems like constraints, and I’m honestly kind of surprised we’ve had physbones this long and no equivalent for the various constraint types.

I do hope that something like that is/could/would be considered, since it’d be a big plus in working between the two versions of the game, and allow more interesting setups overall on android too.

Yes! This is the #1 thing I want, as a user, with regards to performance rank. It would be a huge improvement to be able to see performance stats for both versions of a cross-platform avatar, and to be able to see stats for avatars before they’re loaded.

I wonder if reparenting an object would be more efficient. Probably not if done too often…

If you guys are doing these ask forums, it really needs a major design overhaul, because navigating this site for information is really pretty bad. It gives too little information where you are and how to get places.

It’s too easy to get lost in a thread and not really be sure where you are, it just ends up looking like a facebook chat, or one of those messy comment sections at the bottom of news articles.

Unfortunately the Ask Forums are not very inviting nor particularly friendly to navigate.
Hyper-minimalism isn’t objectively good, it’s just a crappy corporate style trend.

the site needs to be as pleasant to use as possible if you want a lot of traffic here

The mobile layout is a little better since it shows the 3 most recent threads in each category. I wish it was more like that when browsing on my PC.

Maybe there should be a separate thread for feedback on these forums.

Good idea, done!
