Age Verification & Content gating

So I myself am an Adult and I like to go on VRC and spend time with friends and stuff like that. But, I personally due to my own personal reasons don’t verify through the VRchat verification and I don’t really plan on it. I’ve also realized that there is a lot of other people I know and who I don’t know who are adults and don’t verify or don’t plan on verifying due to fears, comfortability, costs, and so on

So in future updates they will enforce content gating and so on which I completely understand and I think is good for the community especially for people who shouldn’t be seeing certain things such as minors. But, I do have to ask for me and other people I know of who don’t wish to verify due to those reasons what will we do in that situation?

Of course the obvious answer would be “ deal with it “ but at the same time I don’t want to feel separated from the rest of my friends my age when it comes to content gating for avatars or so on. I’m perfectly fine now not joining instances because typically I don’t go into public instances unless I’m really bored but I’m wondering if there is any hinted at or future solutions for people like me and others so that they can feel comfortable and still be an adult on VRC without worrying about the current verification process. Alongside that as I’ve heard content gating will not be in our control UNLESS we have verified which as I stated many people don’t want to do or can’t because of their reasons. I’m not wishing for complete freedom because I love the new things that are implemented for safety and I’m happy with the things that are installed as of now.

But, as time goes on it feels like if me and others choose not to verify for a personal reason VRC becomes something where we can’t even control what we see as adults and we either have to opt in to something that we don’t want to do or just feel like a child and be treated as such especially if content gating is something we can’t even control as the future goes on.

Apologies if this is a stupid question of if this was asked in the wrong place but I do mean this message in all positivity and I hope for a system that is safe and still free for people like me and others.

( when replying please try not to be rude I just want genuine answers that give in-sight or help have a good day!! )

It is no a stupid question. I would say it relates to the compromise that you are willing to do.

Let’s begin with a premise I belive is true. Right know you have no reliable way to know the age of the user when they connect to a website or an application.

Because of that, if you want to limit the access to such service to adults, you need to verify in some ways that those users are actually adults.

To do that you have many ways, and one of they is to “trust” VRChat and it’s partner to verify that and be the “source of truth” about that information that is linked to your account. Then when you login with that specific account, you are trusted by the platform to be an adult.

If you don’t want to do that, you need an alternative source of truth to validate that the user is an adult. You can do that in many ways, I’m thinking a curated group with group only instances, a limited friend group with friend only instance, etc.
The limit here is that as you are using the vrchat platform, you are limited by its TOS regarding on what you are able to do to verify those users.

The other solution and the simplest (but also hard to recommend) is that if you have a more reliable way to verify users that conflicts with vrchat, is to not use the platform and either go with one in accordance with your trust requirements / process, or to build your own.

Those would be the ideas I have so far.

This is (as Tupper mentioned in the last video regarding vrchat safety) an unsolvable problematic that simply cannot be accepted by everyone by definition, but I believe personally that the proposition to improve the safety of vrchat users is reasonable and acceptable.

A long message to not add much information, but tiats at least what I think about how you could approach that.

It’s pretty simple. People will move on to other services.

If you watched the video you’ll hear them say content gating in public and group public servers. If you aren’t willing to take what Spokeek said as a compromise, then you’ll have to do what VRChat is better for.

I can only assume this is a reply to me since you didn’t tag me. People constantly misassume where my argument is and where I hold claim of opinion.

If you watch this community and their opinions on the nuances and specifics of how problems should be solved on a case by case basis, you would see that the community is the singular source of every bad update VRC has ever seen, including the need for content gating, and if the average user had their ideas implemented the results would be catostrophically shortsighted.

The devs will do whatever they want, and we will suffer for that: That isn’t up for debate.

Letting other users inject shortsighted ramblings disconnected from the realities of content moderation at scale as internet users, especailly in a time where tyranical governments are actively trying to disrupt individual access to the network with more effort than they ever have before: Ya’ll seem inherently willing and able to utterly miss the point every time, making it all about personal opinions and VRC when there are bigger problems in the world than you or this platform.

I was replying to OP, you have provided nothing to the poster’s topic. What have I said that was wrong?

Here are three other recent threads on the topic to add to your perspective from the last month or two alone:

How does this help OP though?

Hopefully, by ending this conversation topic, again, indefinitely. You know: So the devs can do whatever they were going to do anyway, without people poisoning their approach with shortsighted implementation incentives.

here’s the way I see it.

VRChat is 13+

Users on Quest range from 5y/o - 21y/o+

Users are PC/PCVR 14y/o - 21y/o+

^ (these are what I noticed over many public and even group public instances…) ^

Adult content is freely accessible on either platform. Only until recently has there been a push for VRC to actually moderate.

If you want to access adult content on a FREE game that is diverse in age. You need to have proper content gating an age verification. If you don’t verify you can’t use/see sexual content… period.

Doesn’t matter if you wanna show it off to your friends when you aren’t verified. If they want to play the game casually, let them. If they want to get verified on their own.. let them.

too many people are like “Dont do this, its an invasion of privacy”… it’s not.. it’s not forced on you in any way. You can be the loudest one against age verification but you would still be the minority on the topic. 90% of my friends verified their age. The rest either don’t want to or are more concerned about their data or are unsure, and that’s perfectly fine.

VRChat isn’t meant to be the one stop shop for all things related to adult content.. What did you do on your first few sessions of VRChat?

I’m not against age verification. VRChat in one of their latest videos stated they are going to be implementing content gating in public and group public instances, and I think that is a correct step. What I did in my first few sessions of VRChat was one of the greatest talking experiences I had since, also V_L you should check Az’s post history.

Im fully aware of their posts. Me and them disagree on this topic.

We all just need something that works
