Developer Update - 25 July 2024

I was thinking it could be interesting if the timer was given a visual indicator around the perimeter of the portal, rather than trying to make the number more obvious. Like how some games do circular stamina meters.

Now, just like the new portals… Make an animation of a player leaving + joining. It’s boring to see players disappear and that’s it.

Everything is pretty great, please keep it up like this!
Finally, I’m seeing major improvements after years.

It’s been a crazy week! Even though ripping is difficult to completely eliminate, we really appreciate the new protections against having our content stolen. Also I’m super excited now that we got Input 2.0 and hand tracking. The possibilities seriously open up so much further now. New portals look pretty epic as well. Keep fixing the bugs and keep up the hard work.

Will the Finger Tracking work for Pico 4? If used on Virtual Desktop or Pico Connect? I hope soo because the Standalone version on Pico 4 Doesn’t have finger tracking with is weird because the VR does have it.

Those both hook into steam VR right? Virtual desktop might be more agile. So maybe keep close eye on beta and such if you’re using virtual desktop

I’ve forgotten, how often are your video update roundups? Really enjoyed them for update discussions.

I think they’re doing a video when they increment the version number for like 2024.2.3, but the last two updates to the client were 2024.2.3p1 and 2024.2.3p2

I think the next video will be when the stuff talked about here goes from the openbeta to release

Ooh new portals. One of the best updates in a while. Still gotta see them in person though but looking great.

And aw yeah better ripping prevention.

Also making controller shortcuts however you want is awesome, though I only have room for one more.

I doubt this includes one of my requests, that still confuses me. I want to be able to turn off rumble for when I close my fists without grabbing anything… I find it very strange that this is on by default and that there is no option to turn it off. And it confuses even more when I see that it doesn’t happen when I start VRC via the Meta software instead of Steam. So it happens to me via Steam, which is what I wanna use. I use an Oculus Rift, don’t know if that’s relevant and also can’t remember if I fixed this in the past and if I did I forgot how.

Does anyone know a fix for this or can someone from the VRC team comment on this and tell me that it’s by design or a bug or a feature coming? orz

This is correct! We release a patch notes video with every major release. We also do a video Developer Update when we feel we have something exciting to talk about that can’t quite be covered in, say, a blog post.

Can you link the bug report that you filed? I finally got around to trying that out. I’m also an Oculus Rift user. I fired up VRChat in SteamVR and any time I touch the trigger or grip the little motor does a very faint turn.

I appreciate the shout out to us Tux/Xenia folks! :orange_heart:

I’ve been daily-driving VRChat with SteamVR on Linux since October 2022, and it’s gotten so much better (the early days of AVPro blasting your ears out - shudder). I even managed to attend Furality Umbra with no major issues.

If it’s possible, could you please give us updates on age verification. I think it would be nice to have some transparency there so that we are not blind-sided like we were with easy anti-cheat, although I do believe it really helped with security. The community may be worried about which company you are going with and how it will function.

Speaking of portals, is there any chance we can get area denial for portals in the future? We don’t want to turn off portals, but we dislike when people can use them to troll instances by putting them in doorways exploiting users who don’t have click to enter portal on.

Oh! Nice to be able to talk to someone else about it, nobody really cared when I asked about it in the Discord server. Should add me on Discord in case one of us learns something. I don’t think I sent in a bug report, cause I don’t know if it’s a bug or by design yet. I have to ask around in VRC to see how common it is. That’s why I really wanna contact the team to ask.

Has there been any consideration for allowing separate thumbnails for both the portals and the menus? I feel like a big issue when it comes to portals is having most contain cut of titles used for menus rather than looking like stepping into a new place. Maybe a more practical solution would be to allow creators to align and scale the thumbnail for the portal so they can at least have better image placement.

There would be an add-on protection if player can choose who to reveal their avatar they are using, if the player wish not to show the personal avatar they are using, they could select a substitute avatar like what the fallback does. So there should be no request on the avatar ID available before the “Show Current Avatar to Non-friend”, or even be able to individually select like the safety settings we do on show/hide avatar.

Never the less, glad to see the Devs working hard on it.

Also, Will there be updates on preventing world ripping too?

My understanding is that this idea has been thought through and rejected because of the chilling effect it would have on the new user experience… anyone who is deciding whether to keep coming back to VRC during their first hours would likely see a lot of robots and fallbacks.

I was playing on the beta tonight and everyone pointed out that my fingers were bent backwards. From my side everything seemed normal, but no matter what avatar I used, my fingers appeared backwards to other players. Restarting the game
and later restarting the headset did not resolve the issue.

Once I switched off the beta, the issue was no longer present, and my fingers looked normal to other players.

This was on Virtual Desktop streaming to a Quest Pro.

Personally I’m not a fan of the new fingers on the index controllers. I prefer the old version. Would the devs consider adding a toggle in the settings to switch between the old and new versions?
