Thank you. 21,595 of you filled out the survey in a week. In addition, we spoke to creators in one-on-one interviews and debated internally (several of our team members are also creators in their spare time) to gather more context. From all of that information, we came to a set of discoveries and conclusions. Let’s start with the:
Short Version
- Likes and dislikes are coming to worlds, aiming for release by EOY 2026 and if not that, early next year. Once we have enough data, we’ll explore the best ways to present the ratings and look at how to use them to improve discovery.
- Multi-image world galleries are next, so a single thumbnail isn’t the only thing you see before you join. We’re aiming for the first half of 2027.
- Continuing to protect creators. Harassing someone over the tools they use, or don’t use, is already harassment. We will protect creators from these types of behaviors.
- Misleading thumbnails are now against the rules. We updated our Creator Guidelines with our last post, we’ve contacted authors of worlds who didn’t follow the new guidelines and got their thumbnails corrected, and our next SDK update will ship with a reminder when you pick a thumbnail for your world.
- A “Human-authored” mark and a “Tools used” field are being considered, but not scheduled yet. We explain why below.
- We’re not adding an “AI-generated” label or AI filters. While we think some creators would honestly label their content, we think others would try to pass off generative or assisted work as completely authored by hand. Likewise, we could see this creating “sleuthing” behavior, where folks would attempt to sniff out “AI” content or might harass other creators, even if they are genuinely not using any AI tools in their workflow. We think this potentially creates negative behavior spirals we don’t want to encourage.
What we learned from the community
Figures are weighted toward VRChat’s player base. Some groups answered in smaller numbers, so their results are less certain.
Most of you want transparency, but land at a different definition when asked for details. 95% of survey respondents want some kind of label for AI usage, but there’s very little agreement beyond that. Across the eight example categories we gave, your answers produced 3,141 different combinations of labeling, and no single combination was given by more than 10% of respondents. In other words, we need to understand this a layer deeper before making any kneejerk decisions.
Wanting a label isn’t the same as avoiding everything that would carry one, though. Only a third (33%) would avoid an “AI-assisted” world on purpose. And 37% of everyone who wrote to us said some version of “AI as a tool is fine, as long as a person is doing the creative work.” Further, a small number of respondents want disclosure so that they can learn what tools they could explore on their own.
You agreed on a few key areas. Quality is your number one priority, followed very closely by knowing if a person made something or not. Guidelines against misleading thumbnails (81% “very useful”), discovery that rewards quality (72%) and in-game feedback (69%) were the least divisive things we asked about, including among people who use AI.
You don’t all agree, though. Some of you want AI kept out of VRChat entirely. Others use it as part of how they build, for making tools, for translating UI and text to languages they don’t know, or to write code when they don’t know how. Many fall somewhere in between.
We also learned that many of you take pride in completely rejecting these tools, and that there is a community that appreciates and celebrates this pride. We want to support creators like this (and the players who enjoy their creations), and help them thrive in VRChat long into the future.
Finally, there are long-tenured VRChat creators who are experimenting with AI right now who told us that they are afraid of releasing or showing off their work. They’re worried that if they disclose usage, they’ll be subject to harassment or attacks - something that we don’t tolerate, no matter the reason.
So there isn’t one simple answer here. Most of you want transparency, but where the line sits, and what a label would do to the people who’d have to wear it, looks different depending on who you ask.
Our job at VRChat is to create an inclusive environment where people can connect and express themselves, using whatever method or form of creativity they wish to use. As such, we can’t let any one group’s answer drive our plan. We’re moving forward where there is alignment amongst the community: accurate thumbnails, better discovery, and quality as a core metric.
What we believe
People create worlds and avatars for different reasons. What the creation process means, and what it looks like, are going to be different for everyone. For some creators, that’s going to mean embracing AI. For others, it’s going to mean avoiding it entirely. For many, it’s somewhere in between. We think these creators all deserve a place to share their creations, provided they are not being misleading or otherwise breaking our Community Guidelines.
What we’re doing
- Accurate thumbnails. With our last post, we updated our Creator Guidelines to rule out misleading thumbnails. We’ve since reached out to world authors whose thumbnails didn’t follow them, and an SDK update is coming soon that reminds you not to mislead people when you pick a thumbnail. As a quick aside: We want to allow creative freedom for marketing images, but we draw a line at deception. Transparently, because we have no way to automate detection of something being “misleading,” we’ve found early enforcement of this guideline to be challenging, and we would face the same enforcement challenge with any type of labeling.
- Likes and dislikes on worlds. You’ll be able to give a world a thumbs up or down. We will give you buttons and start collecting that data soon. We’re aiming to do this before the end of 2026, but if not, then early next year. Once we have enough quality feedback, we’ll figure out the best way to show the ratings and look at how to use them to improve what discovery recommends to you. We know a rating system has risks: it can be gamed, and new or slower-built worlds could lose out to fast, flashy uploads. We’re building our system to minimize these risks – for example, when using a rating to influence discovery, we’ll take the activity of users who have rated a piece of content into account.
- Bigger world galleries. Next up after likes and dislikes: more images per world beyond the thumbnail, so you can see what a world really looks like before you join. We’re aiming for the first half of 2027.
- Upholding harassment rules. Harassing someone over the tools they use, or don’t use, is already harassment. We will protect users from these types of behaviors.
All dates are estimates and may change. If we can ship something faster than we’ve estimated and pick up the next project sooner, we will.
What we’re looking at next
Based off the feedback you provided as well as our assessment of how we can most effectively address the core concerns you’ve raised, these ideas are what we’re looking at next. We won’t be able to ship all of these in the near term, but we will continue to chip away to improve the experience of content discovery on VRChat.
- A self-declared “Human-authored” mark for worlds made without generative AI, for those who take pride in their creative process
- A “Tools used” field, so creators can say what they built with
- Richer media on world pages, like video or panoramas
- More from likes and dislikes: on avatars, while you travel, on the web, and/or deeper analytics for creators
- Reviews or comments on worlds
- Following creators
We know the first two are what a lot of you asked for. We’re not promising them yet, because we’d rather tell you what we have concrete plans to build than make a promise we’d have to walk back. We’ll get some more news for you on those before the end of Q1 2027.
Will you build a “Human-authored” mark?
We haven’t decided yet. If we do, it’d be optional, it’d only show on the world’s detail page, it wouldn’t affect discovery ranking, and a missing mark would never be an accusation or something you can report.
We lean toward a “Human-authored” mark over an “AI-generated” label. As it stands, saying you used AI can feel like a confession. However, even then, this is still a huge challenge: what does “Human-authored” even mean? Does it mean that no AI tools were used at all? Does it mean that a human was in charge of all the creative decisions (which is what most of you expressed concern about)? We’re still figuring this out.
One challenge we have is that we need a better understanding about whether, given the above design considerations, the community believes a “human-authored” label would still be useful. That’s a big part of why we don’t want to jump at this right away.
If you’re interested, here’s a very short survey where you can help us answer this question.
What about filters so I can completely turn off this content?
We’re not adding them. Filters get set once and forgotten, and then you never see that part of VRChat again. In addition, a filter assumes that labels are correct, so it inherits all the problems we talked about above. This all results in world discovery and community issues that we’re not keen on having.
On top of that, the definition of AI is quickly evolving and nobody is fully agreed on where the line is. This makes a filtering feature at odds with the landscape of public opinion, which shifts over time and from where you measure it.
Ultimately, we’d rather you see what something is and decide for yourself, world by world.
What’s next
Likes and dislikes come first. Bigger galleries are after that, aiming for the first half of 2027. Then, we’ll pick from the list above.
This is new territory for everyone, us included. The tools are changing faster than any of us can keep up with, and it’s fair to worry about what that means for the things you make and the places you hang out.
What we can promise is that we’ll keep listening, we’ll keep showing our work, and we’ll keep VRChat a place where the people are the point.
https://forms.gle/NVsozx1F4pumBrit6
