Base Animation Controller doesn't work till I use an emote

I am using avatar 3.0 sdk. I duplicated the example locomotion controller and the standing, crouching and prone blend trees. I replaced the animations with my own animations. walking running etc. This is a generic rig btw. After i build and test the animations do not start. The avatar will just stand still when i move around the room, but if I use an emote once then all the animations work fine. walk run etc. Not sure why its not being initialized at the start. Any suggestions that might fix this?
