I would like to create my own avatar, but I would like to know how long it will take me.

Again, this depends on how you make an avatar, if you do not know how to create an avatar, I recommend watching some videos.
It is highly suggested that you start with this video:
Someone can be “commissioned” to create an avatar or world for you, which could include purchasing pre-made components and assembling them, or it could involve creating a completely new avatar / world from scratch.
The answer to this will vary on what you’ve got experience with. At one extreme you’d ask for help in playing windows solitaire (originally created to help people get used to computer mice) all the way to a person with experience making characters in Unity, so the knowledge required is more VRChat specific.
Are you going to start from scratch? Tweak something else? There are a lot of parts that go together to make a functioning avatar and a person can spend either a minimal amount of time or a large amount of time.
